‘Enforce lorry ban in village’
ANarticulated lorry collided with a car in Leeds village sparking calls for its HGV ban to be more rigorously enforced. The incident on January 16 caused disruption to traffic in both directions. The foreign lorry - believed to be
east European - was in collision with a blue Nissan Micra. HGVs have been banned for
years from the village but locals complain the ban is not enforced. Police and paramedics attended
the scene but no one was thought to be seriously injured. UKIP borough councillor eddie
Powell said: “The situation is dia- bolical and totally unfair to the res- idents. We have the same problem in Chegworth where I live.” A police spokesman confirmed
the accident happened at 9am be- tween an HGV and a car and that the roadwas blocked for a time. Gill Fort, the Conservative bor-
ough councillor for Leeds, said: “Lorries use this village every sin- gle day even though there is meant to be an HGV ban. It simply does not get enforced.” After we reported the accident online, Danielle Fitzgibbon posted on Downs Mail’s Facebook page: “Maybe now they will do some- thing aboutHGVs coming through the village.” On January 14, a street sweeping machine overturned near Leeds Castle causing roads to be shut. The machine was travelling
down Penfold Hill near the bridge when it appears to have tipped over, said resident Peter Martin.
