ATA not ready to back incomplete speed limiter rule

Many motor carriers install speed


limiters on their trucks for safety and fuel economy reasons. The question is, should they be required to do so, and if so, what should the speed limit be? Those are questions still to be


answered after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Aug. 26 proposed a rule requiring speed limiters for heavy- duty vehicles. The proposal would affect all new


trucks, buses and multipurpose pas- senger vehicles with gross vehicle weight ratings of more than 26,000 pounds. It offered three potential speeds: 60,

65 and 68 miles per hour, with other speeds possible based on public input. In announcing the proposed rulemaking, the Department of Transportation said slower speeds would increase safety and save $1.1 billion in fuel costs. The American Trucking Associations


supports a national speed limit of 65 miles per hour with all trucks electroni- cally governed at that speed. However,


it is opposed to this particular proposed rule “because it lacks clarity and speci- ficity on major issues that a proposed rule should provide,” said Sean McNally, vice president of public affairs and press secretary. “It also fails to sufficiently account for and address the differentials created by states raising their speed lim- its over the past decade.”
