Town tops list of sex offenders

KENT has the highest number of registered sex offenders in the South East, a study has revealed. About one in every 1,000 people

in the county is a “category one” of- fender – a figure the National Soci- ety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) described as “worrying”. The number has risen from 1,560

last year to 1,595 in 2016. These offenders must notify the

police of their personal details and highlight any changes of their cir- cumstances. Failure to comply is a criminal offence with a potential five-year prison sentence. The Multi-Agency Public Protec-

tion report for 2015-16 shows Kent to have the highest level of offend- ers, but is about average compared to national statistics. AnNSPCCspokesman said: “It is

good that more of these individuals are being put on the list of registered sex offenders but it is worrying that this is such a prolific problem, as many of these offenders will be pae- dophiles. “A trend towards more survivors of sex abuse being willing to come

But there is no room for complacency and it is important to report signs of sexual abuse when they occur.” In Kent, the Offender Personality Disorder programme manages of- fenders most at risk of committing crimes. Involving psychologists and the probation service, it isnowin its fourth year of operation. The report is the work of the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangement (MAPPA). News Poppies made with love

THEY’VE been the sign of remembrance for more than 100 years, but the poppies on sale in Allington this year were the work of ladies from the local Women’s Institute. Dozens of knitted

and crocheted red poppies, produced by the ladies of Allington Castle WI, have been on sale at The Grind coffee shop in Hildenborough Crescent. Patricia Fyfecame

up with the idea three years ago, as a way of marking the centenary of WWI. She said: “We decorated the coffee shop with handmade poppies and found that people wanted to buy them. We’ve been doing it ever since to raise money for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Ap- peal. They’ve proved very popular.” Patricia is pictured with Daphne Butler, Ann Mitchell, Diane Blaber, and Sam Daniell, owner of The Grind cafe.
