that’s true when they play the LCR this month. With lyrics that cover love, hate, and everything in between and music that is biting, vicious and huge in volume, this band are pulling no punches in their quest to create performances and art that satisfies them. Magnificently controlled but insanely wild at the same time, don’t miss out on your chance to see one of the best live bands of all time. I spoke to Gemma Tompson, Savages’ guitar player about art, music and doing the washing up.


You first asked Johnny Hostile, your producer and Jehnny Beth’s partner to be Savages’ singer. I think that the band would be very different if he had joined – what do you think? I’d been in random, experimental bands for about seven years myself and was looking to make a band based on performance. It wasn’t until Jehhny Beth emailed me that we started thinking about the band Savages ended up being. I sat in his living room with a load of demo’s and he said “you don’t want me to be in the band because I’d be too controlling”. So I said OK, no. At the times he was starting Pop Noir so he was very busy anyway. What was the first band or music you heard that made you want to be in a band or play guitar? I never intended to be in a band. I was living in a household full of musicians and making soundtracks for random things. I just picked up what equipment I could find and made what noise I could from that. Someone asked me to join their band as a noisemaking guitarist and it kind of grew from there. I’ve always been surrounded by musicians and I’ve never seen a boundary between music and any other art form, so it’s always
