Chief Executive’s Foreword

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S FOREWORD

life. As we start to feel a freshness to the air and a sense of the days beginning to shorten, there is something else to look forward to. The first main event in the autumn art and antiques calendar in London – the annual LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair.

S The beautiful marquee, elegantly placed beneath

and between the majestic plane trees of Berkeley Square, plays host to over 100 exhibitors from a myriad of disciplines. Welcoming over 20,000 visitors from across the globe to delight in the thousands of unique objects and works of art displayed by our members, the LAPADA Fair has become a part of the cultural fabric of this prestigious and historical area of London. It is down to the hard work and commitment of not just our exhibitors but also our dedicated team that make this event such a success year on year. I want to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to our Fair Direc- tor Mieka Sywak and Fair Organiser Emma McVittie for their tireless work throughout the year. I also want to give special thanks to Louise McSherry who assidu- ously project manages this beautiful Catalogue and Members’ Directory. I am also grateful to our Board and our Fair Committee for volunteering their time throughout the year. But LAPADA is not just a Fair – it is an association of

over 550 members from the UK and abroad who have all been conferred membership in acknowledgement of their expertise in their field. From fine art to deco- rative objects, from ancient through to contemporary, LAPADA members share an unparalleled passion for their métier. Since 1974, LAPADA has been a trust mark for the public and stands for quality, authenticity and confidence. Last year I was privileged to oversee the launch of our new marketplace website where the public can find thousands of rare, beautiful and one-of-a-kind ob- jects and works of art. Experience the thrill of the hunt from the comfort of your home by browsing our site by category or by period or style. Whether you are an avid collector hunting for a sought-after piece for your col- lection or simply looking for a special item with char- acter, patina and a sense of history, at LAPADA.org you are sure to be able to find it. Buyers can also rest assured that, unlike many commercially-run sites, our portal puts you in direct contact with the dealer and no commissions are charged.

eptember in Mayfair is a magical time. Everyone is relaxed from their summer holidays, ready to take on the new challenges of work, school, and

As a trade association, LAPADA also has a responsi-

bility to represent the trade in government and to en- sure that this culturally and economically vital sector of our economy is protected. LAPADA is a founding mem- ber of the British Art Market Federation (BAMF) and an active member of CINOA, the International Confed- eration of Art and Antique Dealers’ Associations. Ours is a global industry, and through these bodies we work diligently to ensure that the UK market can continue to thrive and to compete at an international level. I am grateful to have the opportunity to help to

steer this prestigious organisation forward. I think you will agree that if the displays at this Fair are a reflection of the quality and character of our trade, then the fu- ture looks very bright indeed.
