The Party Spirit

Autumn 2016

Langfords also carries a wonderful silver and glass wine jug and an Edwardian silver tankard with a luxe, boar tusk handle. Both date from circa 1905, yet would not look out of place on, say, a Mad Men set. Indeed the mid-century period too is popular with discern- ing imbibers, who no doubt would also like The Old Corkscrew’s cool 1960 silver shaker and tot measures (it also, as the name suggests, has a superb selection of corkscrews, with its naughty Victorian ladies’ legs not to be missed).

“There is an old-world glamour attached to the 1950s and 1960s,” says Mr Templeton of the era. He and his co- founders – four cousins all under 35 – once created an aviation-themed event with a 1950s “lounge” serving Negronis and Manhattans, and a menu centred around the destinations: Mozambique, Sicily, Gothenburg. Whatever the theme or era, in the end people want a sense of romance. “They like the escapism of going back in time,” says Mr Templeton. “And the chance to use their imaginations.”

ayfair bartenders call Berke- ley Square London Dry Gin one of the best gins

to sip neat, but boy can it hold its own in cocktails, too. Sage, lavender and basil leaves are just a few of the eight botanicals in this hand-distilled gin – which are first carefully wrapped in fine cotton muslin before being sub- merged in triple distilled spirit. The result is a subtle, earthy flavour that the below recipes further enhance – and which won this luxurious gin a gold medal at the prestigious Inter- national Spirits Challenge this year.
