rus, Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet, Pierre Le Faguays, Ferdinand Preiss, Bruno Zach and Josef Lorenzl. ‘The most widely admired are the Lorenzls,’ says specialist John Masters, who co-owns the Design Gallery in Kent. ‘The figures are slightly elongated and they really appeal to people. We can always move those.’ And that’s despite a not-insignificant price tag of £5,000-£15,000. One of the other fields in high demand is glass, in
which French designer René Lalique leads the pack. The pieces signed with his full name are the most valuable – after René’s death in 1945, the glassware creations were simply signed ‘Lalique’. and Stevens and Williams, who employed the talented Deco designer Keith Murray. At the top of the tree in ceramics and one of the most famous names in art deco design, Clarice Cliff cor- nered the market in bright, geometric Cubist-inspired tableware, which can easily fetch £20,000. Her con- temporaries, Susie Cooper and Charlotte Rhead are less famous, but equally good names to look for. The outbreak of war in 1939 may have spelled the end for the fun-loving movement, but objects made during this period will forever capture the sleek and decadent style of the era.
