interference, most notably on the cut- ting room floor. Some scenes seem to have been placed in random spots re- gardless of continuity, while a handful of other scenes and dialogue that can be seen in the trailers are nowhere to be found. The film does not represent what it presented in its amazing trail- ers and the hype that came after them. Where a lot of the characters work well, some fall flat including one of the
most anticipated performances,
Jared Leto as The Joker. Leto simply isn't given enough screen time to jus- tify his performance and in turn we are given nothing more than an exagger- ated cameo that may hold the promise of something better. But that's what the entire film is. Suicide Squad is a movie that was over-hyped and then didn't deliver said hype. Does this mean it's a bad movie? Maybe. Does it mean it
could have been a lot better? Absolute- ly! The biggest problem with super- hero movies today is that we've seen so many of them. We know what to ex- pect and we know what not to expect and sometimes we even know what to expect when they try to subvert our ex- pectations. We compare the new super- hero movies to the slew of other ones that came before it while each subse- quent comic book movie blockbuster is determined to go bigger than the rest. We live in an era of cinema con- gested by the superhero movie. The biggest problem with Suicide Squad was that it tried to be like all other su- perhero movies when the content was anything but. Yes Suicide Squad looks great and yes it can be a fun watch, but only if you can refrain the whole time from thinking that it could have, and should have, been so much better.
