ple? I have stated in the past that there is a signifi cant decline in the numbers of boat- ers and those that have stayed seem to be shifting from bigger boats to day boats, like centre consoles. I know that time and money is a factor, and I am as guilty as many others using time as an excuse. The last weekend in July I fi nally had

time to move a donated boat from Crock- er’s Boat Yard in Manchester By-the-Sea to Portland for a potential buyer to look at. She is a 1959 Wheeler Playmate, which is a higher end wooden cruiser, with great accommodations, but more than that she is a classic. Crocker’s painted the bottom, put on the zincs and gave her a once over and off Al Strout and I went for Portland. Off of Cape Ann the port engine died, and when I checked the switches apparently the battery for the port engines was not turned on. May- be a 100 mile sea trial was a little foolish. We looked at our options, should we go into Rockport, Newburyport or Portsmouth? We were still doing over nine knots so we kept going and called Ann to have her meet us at Kittery Point Yacht Yard instead of Portland. We then called them to let them know we were coming in. It was a great ride and we got into Kittery late afternoon we placed her on the dock. On Monday I called down to explain what I felt was the problem and they took a look at her and agreed, but added that the batteries needed to be changed out. So with new batteries we got back on board the next weekend and headed for Portland. That was another enjoyable day of cruising, but when looking around there were not very many others out on the water. Most of the

boaters out were sportfi shermen and there were not many of them. I am not a cruiser, I jump on other

people’s boats and go out for a ride. I have stated several times I think I missed an aspect of boating that you cannot get from running around the coast on land or from a desk. I think if there is a will there is a way. I spend a lot of time working on computers and one could still do this onboard a boat, and at the same time get around the coast, meet diff erent people and enjoy an aspect of boating most fail to enjoy. Years ago families used to take a week or two, maybe more, and climb on their boat and go cruising. Kids of that era enjoyed the thrill of sailing, now they enjoy the thrill of video games while life passes them by. I am not sure if the pace of life will ever slow enough for some to see the enjoyment in cruising. Too many of the cruising boats have now become cottages at the marina, never to venture to far from her berth. If this was my boat, I would certainly re-evaluate cruising. Well the lobster boat racing season has

come to an end and what a year it was. Now with my weekends free, and the workshop, yard, boat(s), and offi ce in desperate need of attention I will not be amiss for something to do. If I am, I always have all those old newspapers up at UM zero to go through or transcribe the thousands of photographs I have already taken from old newspapers. Yes I also have access to a cruiser and that may become my fi rst option.
