21 November 1903 Schooner HORACE A. STONE Was Launched Saturday
Handsome Craft From Stetson’s Yard Dipped at 11:30 Many People Late
Vessel West Into the Water Without Ceremony and Free From Diffi culty The four-masted schooner HORACE
A. STONE was launched from the Stetson shipyard at Brewer Saturday forenoon at exactly 11:30 o’clock, taking one of the prettiest dips into the Penobscot within the memory of the oldest mariner in this vicinity. The launching took place without any ceremony whatever and was witnessed by a crowd of people which was much smaller than it would have been had it occurred half an hour later, the time announced. The vessel slid off very smoothly into the river and was brought to a stop. The Men Who Built Her.
Leverit Strout of Milbridge was master
workman and C. A. Betts of Bangor, head joiner. Edward Snowman of Bucksport, head calker; Hiram O. Eaton of Brewer, head blacksmith; Henry Gardner of Castine, head rigger; William H. Dunbar of Brewer, head painter. The sails were made by James D. Mulvaney & Son of this city and Morse & Co. made the interior fi ttings and fi nishings. The cabins are the pride of Capt. Trask
as they are constructed of wood picked up by him on his voyages in Southern and Central America. The after cabin is solid mahogany and the forward is cypress. The schooner
is fi tted with a toilet room with a bath tub and open plumbing. Her cabins, fo’castle and midship house are all heated by steam. The midship house contains the galley and storerooms. The forward house contains the engine room and fo’castle. The vessel is fi tted with large wrecking
pumps and has all appliances for handling the pumps, anchors, sails and other gear by steam.
She is equipped with two patent Baldt
stockless anchors which weigh 4,500 and 4,900, respectively. The anchors are connected with 180 fathoms of stud link, 1 7/8 inch chain.
27 November 1903 With the Ships
Penobscot Frozen Over and No Tow Came Up on Friday Launching of CAISSON
Queer Craft Went at Bath – CIMBRIA Got Stuck This Morning But Sailed – Notes
The river was pretty well frozen over
Friday with ice a couple of inches thick. The little ferry boat BON TON got stuck in the stream in the early morning but was running through the broken ice by 8 o’clock The CIMBRIA started out bright and early for Bar Harbor but succeeded in only getting half way to High head when she found herself securely stuck in the ice. The tug STELLA came to her assistance, broke up the ice around her and after some delay the steamer went on her way down river.
Owing to the cold weather and likelihood
of being frozen in the river, the new schooner HORACE A. STONE has been taken to Belfast, where she will be fi nished and in a few days will be all ready for service. No tow came up on Friday, it being
stated that there were no vessels below. Thursday and Friday’s clearances included the Italian bark CATARINA, Cacuce, Palermo for R. W. Stewart; barge TIPTON, Philadelphia, and the schooners GEORGE NEVINGER, Boston, Eastern Mfg. Co.; OMAHA, Gloucester, F. H. Strickland; S. S. KENDALL, New York, Sterns’ Lumber Co.; CIRCLE, Deer Isle, Morse & Co.; L. SNOW, JR., same; RIGHT AWAY, Boston, Sterns Lumber Co. The schooners LIZZIE D. SMALL and
LILIAN, with corn and cement for A. R. Hopkins & Co., Boston, came up Thursday. The schooner S. P. BLACKBURN will sail on Saturday, fi nishing her cargo at 9 o’clock in the morning.
Launching of the CAISSON. The launching of the CAISSON at the
Bath Iron Works Tuesday attracted more attention from the employees in every department than any launching event in the history of the fi rm. The odd shape of the CAISSON gave cause for a lively discussion as to how she would run down the ways to the river. When everything was in readiness the string which held her was parted and she made as pretty a shoot into the river as any craft ever launched, in Bath, and the shipyard department received a volley of

applause for the admirable manner the work was performed. Only two persons launched on board, Andrew F. Frederickson, the boss rigger, and his assistant. One of the spectators said, “I have seen all kind of launchings but never before saw a CAISSON go overboard. It was more exciting if anything, than a ship launching for the CAISSON had one of the longest runs before she struck the water, ever used for any kind of craft. She went as straight as a shot of a gun and when she came to a stop righted as fair as a perfectly trimmed ship with ballast.” The craft is a double ender of peculiar
ship and is the fi rst of the kind ever built in Bath. The measurements are: Length extreme, 104 feet 2 inches; breadth moulded, 22 feet; depth from bottom of keel to underside of upper deck at side, 36 feet 6 inches. She has 14 culverts and two sinking valves 20 inches in diameter. The outside plating runs from 3.4 to 3.8 inches. Her launching displacement is 480 tons. In the hold are 80 tons of ballast. The CAISSON is equipped with a centrifugal pump engine with ten inch pump and an engine with ten inch pump and an engine and boiler for the pumping. Twenty minutes will be required to fi ll the craft. The tug PERRY was in attendance at the launching. The CAISSON will be towed to Portsmouth and it is expected she will be ready for the trip next month. There was no ceremony over the launching. For a long time she was known as Commander Nauman’s yacht.
