New boats to inspire success
MAIDSTONE Invicta Rowing Club (MIRC) celebrated four additions to its fleet at a boat naming ceremony. The boats – a coxless four, two double sculls and a single scull – are
named the Anne Salmon, TomSaunders, Sue Mobbs and Alistair Hill after members of the club who have all volunteered their time and effort over many years on the club committee. Club chairman Harry Salmon said: "It is especially pleasing to have this
ceremony after such success for the Team GB rowing squad at Rio. British rowing is riding high and these new boats will help Maidstone Invicta bring through another generation of athletes to compete at the highest levels of our sport." Director of rowing, Brian Humphris, said: “These new boats are all part of our drive to turn the club into the regional centre of excellence".
‘Bit of a do’ for charity
A BIT of a (Hair) Do at a salon in Vinters Park has raised more than £1,500 for Dementia UK. About 100 people turned out for a
trim and tidy at the Revolution salon, where staff put their takings towards the charity, in memory of the owner’s father Barry Clarke. Simon Clarke, who owns the
salon in Snowdon Parade, said: “Thiswas a great success, thanks to
a lot of people turning up and our stylists’ hard work. Bazza would have been so proud.” A guess-the-number contest, in
which a mini was filled with bal- loons, and a raffle, with prizes do- nated by The George at Leeds; The Chequers Inn at Loose; B&Q; Leeds Castle; Hollywood Bowl and The Rose, Bearsted, helped swell the funds to over £1,500.
