put on hold AFTERlengthy consideration,mem- bers of the finance and general pur- poses committee decided not to release funds to extend the small meeting room at Beechen Hall. Having taken into consideration

the cost, the current uncertain situa- tion caused by Brexit and whether there was a proven need for such a room, members agreed to progress with refurbishing the toilets, replac- ing front doors and improving the front entrance layout. CllrPaul Dengatewas thanked for producing the information. It was acknowledged that, whilst deciding not to go ahead with the project, the information supplied had been invaluable to allow an in- formed decision to be taken. The hall, which was opened in

1994, is extensively used by commu- nity groups and is available for hire for parties, weddings etc. Work in the hall has included replacing ceil- ing lights. Car park lights will be in- stalled shortly. The parish office is also at Beechen Hall and leaflets on walks are available from the office.

Local plan

THEMaidstone Borough Local Plan which will identify the policy re- garding development in the bor- ough for the next 20 years is reaching its public inquiry stage. The parish council has employed

a planning consultant to help it pres- ent its case as members have concern over the protection of the country- side and theway that supporting in- frastructure is not in place before development begins. The parish council is also con- tributing to the cost of the Maidstone branch of the Kent Association of Local Councils which is employing a planning consultant to argue that parts of the submitted local plan are not correctly produced.

Future projects THE parish council is now starting to consider what projects to under- take in the next financial year. Councillors are being asked to supply details to the parish office and residents arewelcome to send in their thoughts as well. All projects will be submitted to the parish coun- cil or one of its committees and eval- uated before a decision is made

Vandals rip up safety surface at play area

THE safety surface at Weavering Diamond Jubilee Orchard’s chil- dren’s play area has been van- dalised, with large strips of the edging surface around the play equipment being pulled out. The damagewas discovered by a member of staff on August 19 and the police and parish council would be grateful for any informa- tion to try to narrow down when the damage was done and if possi- ble by whom. Cllr Bob Hinder, chairman of the

parish council said: “This is a pop- ular and well-loved play area and this damage and the mindless dam- age done to the trees at the orchard is an insult to all the people of Weavering and Grove Green.” Boxley Parish Council created the

orchard and took on responsibility of the play area as its Diamond Ju- bilee project to celebrate the Queen’s 60th year on the throne. Opened by the Earl and Countess ofWessex on May 31, 2012, the or-

chard is still establishing itself but the playground, with new equip- ment chosen by the local children, is extremely well used. Just over 3,000 people attended

the opening with children from St John’s School singing a specially composed song which delighted the royal couple. Chairman of the estates commit-

tee, CllrVic Davies said: “As the or- chard is a bit tucked away it is probable that the vandal or vandals are local, which is an unhappy thought”. The park had to be closed due to safety concerns whilst repairswere arranged. Anyone with information is

asked to either contact the parish office or Kent Police quoting crime reference YY-18262-16.

Burial rights

THEestates committee has reviewed the rules and regulations that cover its burial ground located at the rear of St Mary and All Saint's Church in Boxley village. Residents of the civil parish and in special circumstances, residents of the ecclesiastical parish can be buried there. The committee clarified the eligi-

Allotment holder Richard Dean receives the cup from Ann Spain Allotment cup is presented

A BARBECUEwas held at Dove Hill Allotments on Sunday, August 14 and the Ann Spain MBC Challenge Cup was awarded for the first time. The cup was donated by Ann Spain, a previously long-serving parish councillor and a supporter for the development of the allotments. It will now be awarded annually, as well as rosettes for first, second and third place. The Mayor and Mayoress of Maidstone, Derek and Mary Butler along

with Mrs Spain had the difficult task of judging the allotments, taking into account design, attractiveness, innovative use of alternative/recyclable materials and overall impression. They awarded the cup to Richard Dean. Second place was awarded to Paul Dengate and third to Will Wrapson. Pamand Keith and Michael Price were highly commended. Two allotment (quarter) plots are available for hire to residents of the

civic parish of Boxley. At a cost of £15 per year this is a cheap way to sup- ply all the family with fresh vegetables and fruit. For details go to the parish council website or contact the parish office.
