Degrees and university placements are no longer the only choice for young people leaving school who are considering further education. Leeds village resident JON GRAHAM, chief executive of Kent-based JTL Training, explains why…


THERE has never been a better time for school leavers to consider an apprenticeship. With over 280 different apprenticeships now available across over 170 different industries and a commitment from government to deliver at least three million apprenticeships over the next five years, it’s no wonder we are seeing ever-increasing numbers of young people choosing to ‘earn while they learn’ and developing essential work-ready skills for their futures.


Apprenticeships are work- based learning programmes varying in length from typically 1 to 4 years, usually requiring attendance at a local college, together with on-the-job training. If an employer takes you on as an apprentice, you'll receive a salary, benefits including paid holidays,


and a nationally recognised qualification on completion. For the employer, in many instances, the Government will cover all the training costs involved too. Degrees are no longer the only choice for school leavers considering further education, and recent research suggests that three years of university will leave a graduate with an average £40,000 of student debt. Compare this with an apprenticeship, which costs nothing for the


apprentice and provides valuable work experience and a salary throughout its term. You can see why, in a country with a widely acknowledged skills shortage, we are moving into a new world of work, with much greater parity between academic and more practically-minded school leavers. For those who are unsure if an apprentice is for them, there are also traineeships. These are shorter programmes of typically 8-12 weeks duration which provide school leavers with essential work-readiness skills and at least four weeks of work experience from a local employer, with bursaries usually available to help with travel. Many Trainees upon completion successfully


secure apprenticeships with their work experience employer.
