WOOD WASTE RECYCLING

from the UK has largely been driven by favourable gate fees received by wood recyclers in the South of England.

“Exports became essential for recyclers in that region, who had built processing capacities for a growth in the UK’s bioenergy market, which didn’t materialise at the expected rate, but exports are now expected to disappear as the domestic sector reaches full capacity,” she added.

While this may be the case for many UK wood reprocessors, from Hadfi eld Wood Recyclers’ perspective, export will remain a long-term market. “For us, export is still a very viable market, which is why we have invested in our site at Tilbury Docks,” said Vicki. “Export has provided a relief valve for many recyclers over the past few years, but for us it will remain a core business, as well as supplying to plants in the UK.” With demand for biomass increasing, it is feared by some that the panel board industry will suffer from a lack of feedstock

supply as more wood is diverted to biomass.

“In the long run, the question will be price and how much each sector can afford to pay for their feedstock,” stated Lauma. “Wood paying capability is a good measure that helps us understand how future trade fl ows could develop, but capability should not be confused with willingness to pay, which is a very different

matter and one not infl uenced by incentive schemes.”

Vicki concluded: “While we don’t think there will be a huge impact on the panel board industry in the UK in the short term, it is possible there may be in the longer run and as prices vary, the industry may look more towards virgin material for its feedstock. The immediate impact has been lessened with the closure of major
