Today, biomass accounts for the biggest use of recycled and recovered wood waste in the UK, at around 1.2 million tonnes a year. This is set to rise to around 2.8 million tonnes by the end of 2018 due to the many large-scale plants planned. “Biomass is defi nitely a growth market,” said Vicki. “We have seen an increasing number of requests to supply plants here and abroad, both small and large scale.

and speak to Hadfi eld Wood Recyclers, who will be supplying wood chip fuel to a 5.4 MW wood-fuelled biomass plant, which is the latest project to secure fi nancial backing in a growing domestic biomass marketplace. The £25 million project, which will be built in Wrexham, North Wales, will generate around 34 GWh of green electricity a year, enough to power 2,400 homes. The combined heat and power (CHP) plant will also have the

potential to provide heat to nearby manufacturing businesses. Hadfi eld Wood Recyclers, one of the UK’s leading wood waste recyclers, will supply fuel to the CHP plant. The company has three sites in Manchester, Middlesbrough and Essex, and offers a nationwide service for collection or tip-in of all grades of non-hazardous wood waste. Vicki Hughes, Group

Development Director for Hadfi eld Wood Recyclers, said: “We are delighted to have won the contract for supplying fuel to this project. It is ideally located for us from all of our sites and we are

looking forward to working with everyone involved”. Hadfi eld Wood Recyclers supplies fuel to many of the UK’s wood-derived biomass plants either directly or indirectly, including MVV at Ridham Dock, Wilton 10 (Sembcorp) in Middlesbrough, RWE at Markinch and Steven’s Croft at Lockerbie. It also exports biomass to plants in Sweden, Germany, Holland and Estonia.

The UK generates between 4.5 and 5 million tonnes of wood waste a year. Around 3.5 million tonnes is recycled or recovered into products, including biomass,

“For us the balance is always ensuring we can consistently supply a good specifi cation of material while ensuring it is fi nancially viable for both parties. As demand rises, the quality of material supplied is something customers need to pay particular attention to as poor quality material can lead to huge problems further down the line.” According to fi gures from the Wood Recyclers Association, the UK’s trade body for wood recyclers, biomass became the largest market for UK recycled wood chip three years ago, with demand overtaking that for panel board.

Since then, the market has continued to grow both here and in Europe, with around 750,000 tonnes of biomass being exported to Europe annually.

Lauma Kazuša from Pöyry Management Consulting, has specialised in analysing the UK and Europe’s wood waste sector for a decade. She said she has seen a number of European countries invest in large bioenergy and energy-from-waste facilities during that time, using wood waste as their feedstock. “With landfi ll not being an option for countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium, energy generation is the best alternative option for wood waste,” said Lauma. “Much supply for these plants is being exported from the UK.
