Alex Collins takes up the story, “Our production and inventory management systems mean we can offer a close to just- in-time delivery service for Ecodek. This means fitters have the right quantity of materials on site exactly when they need them. Boards are frequently fitted on the day of delivery with another load already on its way to site ready for use the next day.”


“No cutting of boards on site means that installation costs for each deck are kept to a minimum” he added.


Minimising site waste is another green credential box that Ecodek firmly ticks. Management and disposal of waste materials are high costs items that can eat into the profitability of a contract and in this area, with its off-cut buy back facility, Ecodek does its bit to keep the skip count down.


So popular has Ecodek become that it is also being used on some of the most prestigious developments in the Capital.


At Nine Elms Point on the south bank of the Thames, over 640 luxury apartments and town houses are being built, many with Ecodek balconies or terraces, in a collection of seven separate riverside buildings.


The Nine Elms development which was awarded “Built for life” status, a Government endorsed commendation for the best new homes, was recently described by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson as being “part of the most important regeneration story in London over the next 20 years.”


Further east and close to Canary Wharf is the Royal London Wharf development of apartments and townhouses, described as being the newest member of London’s “City of villages” which traditionally has included Belgravia, Fitzrovia, Mayfair and Bloomsbury. These again make extensive use of balcony decks of Ecodek.


Four miles west of Central London is the Fulham Riverside development which overlooks the Thames from an 8.5 acre site. Here, Ecodek balconies add to the luxury specification of “one of London’s hottest (property) areas” and surely helped it win a “Highly Commended” award in the London Evening Standard, New Homes Awards 2015.

Ecodek is a wood polymer composite (WPC) made up of 55% hardwood waste and 40% recycled high density polyethylene


As well as balconies and terraces, Ecodek is suitable for a host of applications where timber would otherwise be used. These include boardwalks, footbridge decks, patios and walkways etc where its durability, strength and low maintenance make it the preferred choice.


Ecodek’s has a solid cross section and high tensile strength which, according to the manufacturer, gives it a greater support span than many products and also eradicates the performance issues like creaking, deformation and cracking associated with lower quality composite products.


Similarly, Ecodek’s permanent, leach proof colour won’t run down and stain brickwork as a result of exposure to the elements - particularly relevant to high-rise luxury apartment structures.


The “eco tag” is widely used on a whole raft of products, many of which sometimes struggle to live up to the associated green reputation. However, on the strength of the evidence above, Ecodek is one of the few that can comfortably live with the claims. It’s UK made from wood waste and recycled polyethylene. It’s supplied cut to length to save time, costs and on site waste and even offers a buy back facility for any surplus material or off-cuts.


By any criteria, Ecodek can hold its ground in the tough, eco-focussed world of UK construction
