MARTINIS ABOVE FOURTH

TABLE + STAGE “A little song, a little dance...” And a whole

SORDID LIVES The Coronado Playhouse is getting a little

sordid... It’s taking on Del Shores’ tall Texas tale about three generations of one family who have gathered together for the funeral of the clan’s matriarch. The play, running from Friday, May 27 through Sunday, June 26 is loosely based on elements of Shores’ life growing up gay in conservative Texas. The show centers on how each comes to grips with the accidental death of the family’s elderly matriarch, during a clandestine “coming together” at a seedy motel with her married and much younger neighbor. Chaos erupts in Winter, Texas when Mama bleeds to death after tripping over her lover’s wooden legs...And the whole town knows about it! As Shores’ camp stated, it’s a “Black comedy about white trash” and carries everything from affairs to cross-dressing and bigotry, guilt, homosexuality, forgiveness and accep- tance. Sordid Lives has much to say in a short amount of time, offering a laugh-a-minute, colorful and wildly entertaining joyride. 42ND STREET “Come and meet those dancing feet. On

the avenue I’m taking you to, 42nd Street...” Classic Broadway comes to life on the Spreckels Theatre stage from Friday, May 27 through Sunday, June 12 in this show about the life on the great white way. Peggy Sawyer is fresh off the bus in New York City, having left her hometown of Allentown, PA. Through a fluke of luck, and an amorous suitor, Peggy manages to land a spot in the chorus of Pretty Lady, 1933’s latest show. Through another series of happy accidents, she ends up with the lead role in the production, which she has to learn in two days... Though hard work, perseverance and a mass of talent, she does so, much to the surprise of many naysayers and secures her place as the stage’s newest phenom. Musical hits include: “You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me,” “Dames,” “I Know Now,” “We’re In the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and “Forty-Second Street.” Performances take place at the historic Spreckels Theatre in Downtown San Diego. CAMP DAVID It’s the 1970s and much like today, 40 years later, Middle East peace seems a remote possibility.

In what has become his lasting legacy, President Jimmy Carter (played by Richard Thomas of The Waltons fame) manages to broker a conversation between the region’s world leaders, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, leading to an extraordi- nary agreement that inspired the entire world during a 13-day marathon, conducted under the President and First Lady Rosalynn Carter’s watchful...and often exasperated eyes. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lawrence Wright tells the historic story with humor, great insight and as many surprises as three world leaders, each devoutly committed to his faith, who find peace is possible and that hope is always the better choice. Camp David runs Friday, May 13 through Sunday, June 19 at the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park. For tickets and more information, call 619.234.5623 or go to theoldglobe.org.
