FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
FRIDAY, JUNE 3
KISS ME, KILL ME: 7 p.m. Directed by Casper Andreas, this over-the-top thriller about a gay man (Van Hansis, of As the World Turns) who blacks out while confronting his cheating boyfriend (Queer as Folk’s Gale Harold), only to wake up to learn that someone’s been murdered and he’s the prime suspect, promises to be a guilty pleasure. Jai Rodriguez (Queer Eye), D.J. “Shangela” Pierece (RuPaul’s Drag Race) and Brianna Brown (Devious Maids) co-star.
OPENING NIGHT PARTY: Sunset Temple, 8:45 p.m. Meet and mingle with the cast of Kiss Me, Kill Me and enjoy food from 15 San Diego restaurants and cocktails from Stella Artois and Smirnoff.
SATURDAY, JUNE 4
BEST OF LGBT SHORTS: 11 a.m. Ten shorts from some of the community’s brightest up-and- comers, including Australia’s Darren L. Downs, whose The Tormentors features the return of ‘80s heartthrob Maxwell Caulfield (Grease 2, The Colbys).
TOY: * 1:15 p.m. Patrick Chapman’s Kickstarter- funded drama of lust, sex and desperation. ToY tells the story of a wealthy artist (Briana Evigan) who falls for an aging call girl (Kerry Norton).
UPSTAIRS INFERNO: * 3:30 p.m. A riveting documentary about the intentionally set 1973 fire that killed 32 people in the UpStairs Lounge, a New Orleans gay bar.
SHARED ROOMS: * 8 p.m. A sexy, romantic comedy that explores the meaning of home and family through three, inter- related stories of gay men looking for connection between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
PARIS 05:59 (THEO AND HUGO): 10 p.m. An audacious and graphic drama about love — and sex — in the modern age. This sexually-charged tale follows two young men who meet in a Parisian sex club and spend the rest of the night wandering the streets of Paris together.
SUNDAY, JUNE 5
DOWNRIVER: 11 a.m. A former inmate implicated in the drowning of a young boy, sets out on a journey of self-discovery after he is released from prison, in this brooding and powerful import from down under.
CLOSET MONSTER: * 3 p.m. A teenager (American Crime’s Connor Jessup) haunted by the memory of a tragic gay bashing he witnessed as a child, turns to a talking hamster (voice of Isabella Rosellini) to help him confront his demons — and his sexuality.
FLATBUSH LUCK: * 7 p.m. Casper Andreas’ closing night feature tells the thrilling story of a former Wall Street hot shot and his buttoned-up cousin, who find themselves in over their heads after they attempt to cash in on an illegal, insider trading deal.
CLOSING NIGHT PARTY: West Coast Tavern, 9 p.m. Celebrate this year’s festival with this closing night gala featuring the cast of Flatbush Luck and other festival entries.
