THERAPY SESSION NF NF offers an ultimately solid rap of intellect and rhyme carefully revealed in a free form style of heartaches and life’s reality. The poetry of his emotions is combined with a thoughtful cove of subtle, musical arrangements of piano, guitar and chorus. Two tracks titled “Real” and “Statement” spark like lightning and remind one of the finest qualities of Eminem. NF truly presents a spitfire of conviction with a delivery as fast as a hummingbird in flight that is beautifully brilliant to hear. Available now
HOPELESSNESS Anohni The lead singer of Antony and the Johnsons transforms into a breathtaking solo artist known as Anohni. Hopelessness, though wrapped in an electronic dance haze of beats is a serious and thought-provoking lyrical study. Her words bite and showcase a dark and analytical view of men, power and war. Anohni’s distinctive and rich voice rings a bell of consciousness that brings provocation and regret. And what a voice… with a quality of tone and heartache which harken back to Sarah Vaughan. Available May 6
DANGEROUS WOMAN Ariana Grande With an amazing range of vocal beauty matched with a modern and up-to-date rhythm of the day in musical beats, Ariana Grande truly is a Dangerous Woman. Her third CD expands on these facts and showcases a voice of Mariah Carey vibrancy with a few talented assists from Macy Gray, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Future. What’s not to love? Rabbit ears are perked to high alert for discovering the latest creations of sounds and stylings from this vivacious popstar. Available May 20

HENRY GAMBLE’S BIRTHDAY PARTY The conflicting emotions of Christian beliefs and burgeoning homosexuality for a 17-year-old teenager create psychological drama during his 17th birthday pool party. There is an underlying tension from Henry’s mother which comes into play while Henry has to navigate the waters (so to speak) between sexual and accepted attraction from the opposite sex, as well. It’s of note, there is as much intrigue and repressed sexual- ity happening between the adults as the teenagers. Quite a thought provoking and well-made film.

JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE There’s an old adage; if you remember the late 1960s, you weren’t there. In the brilliantly fleshed-out documentary called Janis: Little Girl Blue, filmmaker and director Amy Berg does a magnificent job of bringing Janis Joplin’s life to the screen and creates a portrait to always remember. The attention to detail, from her personal letters to current interviews with former bandmates, lovers and siblings is captivating to witness. A truly touching presentation of a “piece of her heart” and art.

BEAUTIFUL SOMETHING The complications of lust, sexuality and self-esteem are presented through the eyes of four gay men. In the vignettes, which are highly sexually charged… the emotions are raw and the expression of sex is realized where each man can be seen as being used or being the user for sexual gratification where love is always difficult to navigate. It’s director Joseph Graham’s use of heat, friction, identity and disconnect plus uncertainty over the course of one night that is magnetically charged.
