EVENT PREVIEW ITS WORLD CONGRESS 2016

ITS: The Next Generation C

anada and Australia share a special transportation kinship. ITS Asia Pacific will host the 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transportation this 10-14 October in Melbourne, Australia and

of course, next year, ITS Canada will host the 24th World Congress in Montreal, Quebec. But the kinship between the two nations runs far deeper. Both Canada and Australia have huge land masses featuring densely populated major cities with thousands of kilom- eters of unpopulated areas between them. They mirror each other, but they don’t necessarily offer the same view. Throughout its short history, Intelligent Transportation has

rarely generated one-size-fits all solutions and neither Canada nor Australia has a monopoly on good ideas or business opportunities. Under the banner of “Next Generation ITS: Connectivity, Proximity and Mobility,” ITS Canada’s Annual Meeting in Calgary will bring together the nation’s best and brightest to showcase Canada’s cut- ting edge transportation solutions. Then in October, thousands of the world’s transportation leaders will gather in Melbourne, Aus- tralia to consider ITS from an entirely different perspective. Dean Zabrieszach (right), Vice President of ITS Australia, will par-

ticipate in both events. As Project Director of the 23rd World Con- gress he’ll offer a personal invitation to delegates at ITS Canada’s Annual Meeting. “The similarity between our two nations is pro- found,” he says. “We have similar populations, similar infrastruc- tures and frankly, similar transportation issues. We’re confident that Canadian attendees to our World Congress will find new solutions and a new, global audience for their ideas.” Australia last played host to the ITS World Congress in Sydney

in 2001. Since then, Zabrieszach points out, the acceleration of ITS development and deployment has created an entirely new transportation landscape. “Melbourne has been voted the world’s most liveable city for five consecutive years. With the theme ITS - Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities, the World Congress is an opportunity for international guests to come and see how our infrastructure, transportation and mobility including road, rail and tram networks, port and airports, plus cycling, motorcycling and walking routes connects states, regional centers, cities and com- munities.” But ITS isn’t just making a difference in Australia’s population

densities. Rural areas and industry are benefitting as well. “Australia has embraced new mobility technologies through its mining and agricultural industries, and our need to transport goods and serv- ices over vast distances to our growing big cities and suburbs.” he

CONNECTED CANADA SUPPLEMENT 28

Charlotte Jover invites ITS Canada Annual Conference and Exhibition attendees to the 23rd ITS World Congress in Melbourne, Australia

says. “Industry, commerce and consumers are demanding better travel times, safer vehicles and more efficient networks.” And we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that Australia’s not just

a wonderful place to do business, it’s also one of the most inspiring destinations in the world. Melbourne is home to world class dining, fabulous beaches and a vibrant cultural and theater scene and if you’re interested in combining the World Congress with a bucket list holiday, Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef and New Zealand are just a short, weekend hop away. Dean Zabrieszach adds: “We look forward to welcoming you to

Australia. We believe you’ll not only find business success but also create a lasting memory.” l
