SMART COMMUNITIES WELCOME NOTE The connected generation
Welcome to Next Generation ITS: Connectivity, Proximity and Mobility, by Keenan Kitasaka

s Program Chair of ITS Canada’s 2016 Annual Conference and Exhibit (ACE), I want to welcome you all to Calgary, Alberta. Since the 2015 conference in Gatineau, Quebec, many volun-
teers have worked hard to plan and organize this event which has been a year-long endeavour. This journey to our 2016 conference began with the important
step of selecting the theme: “Next Generation ITS: Connectiv- ity, Proximity, and Mobility”. In turn, each of the six related sub- themes have developed into robust and interesting sessions. So, what’s the basis for this theme? Why are we so passionate
about how ITS affects the next generation? I see the “reason” every night, sitting across from me at the dinner table. My kids are part of that “next generation”, just as many of yours are. Our family is filled with members of the next generation who are “Internet savvy”, mobile and connected. Yet, they have so many pressures to deal with, including transportation, education and jobs. And they will be the ones, among others, who will be demanding the future services and applications that we develop as ITS professionals. We need to transform our communities, our way of life, and our future systems to be safer, more efficient and secure. I want to leave this legacy for them. They’re the reason why I still work in ITS – to make our communities better for our kids and families. ITS enables us to make this difference.
