Like any industry or walk of life, dentistry has its fair share of ongoing debates, ‘controversies’ that keep cropping up and issues that don’t seem to go away. While the financial situation and the impact of benefits cuts has rumbled on over the best part of the last decade, the issue of mercury and dental amalgam is one that has been going on for even longer. Recently, the IDA was forced to reiterate its advice on amalgam after a newspaper report
claimed that one in six practices bidding for public contracts had failed inspections due to the lack of an amalgam separator.
All practices should have these installed by now and, as the IDA chief executive was quoted as saying, I would expect the numbers quoted to be much lower if the inspections were carried out today. However, stories such as these always reopen the debate over dental amalgam. The Minimata Convention compelled signatories

to reduce rather than abolish the use of dental amalgam, but the fact remains that there currently isn’t a better alternative – both clinically and financially.
However, the anti-mercury lobby, like that of the anti-fluoride camp, tend to make a lot of noise and the profession always seems to take the flack...
