Maine Fishermen’s Forum and the Maine Boatbuilder’s Show, now spring should be right around the corner. This coupled with the warm weather that we have had in February and March has made some people real excited for the upcoming boating sea- son. Some of the boat dealers have said that they have had a lot of interest this year and in many cases this has translated into boats sold. Hopefully that is an indication of a good all around boating season. As for this winter, it has been more

than pleasant with only about ten days of real winter showing up here and there. Last winter was brutal, a real Maine winter, and this one was a relief to many. I really do not mind when the weather forces me inside. I did manage to get some inside projects done, but never as much as I should have. I worked as much as I could on ship data entry and have just under 2,000 to go. I really wanted them all in before the boat shows as there is still about 55 years of updating to do to complete this part of the project. What I really want to know, well maybe I do not, is how much time it is going to take to input each year from 1886 to 1940? I do know the closer I get to 1940 the easier it will be as the number of sailing vessels decreases rapidly after 1900. The problem will be when I add in the steamers and motor vessels, which does just the opposite by exponentially. It is no secret I love reading historical

books and I have felt for a long time that I was amiss by not having read some of the true classic maritime history books when I was younger. Right now I am reading Howard Chapelle’s book “The History of the

American Sailing Navy, The Ships and Their Development.” Many of Chapelle’s books have been reprinted over the years, but I hap- pened to fi nd an original copy of this book with the nice fold out lines of many of the vessels he documented in the text. Chapelle was a naval architect and later in his career worked at the Smithsonian Institute and was extremely well versed in the historical aspects of marine architecture. He wrote a number of books, but he is most noted for the book I am reading as well as ones on small sailing craft, yacht designing, boatbuilding, history of American sailing ships, search for speed under sail, Baltimore clippers and American fi shing schooners. He can be cred- ited with saving a lot of maritime history that otherwise would have disappeared, either by collecting information or artifacts. This is an interesting book for those looking to under- stand the early development of vessels for our Navy. Many might have heard the name Humphrey as he was the designer of the orig- inal six frigates, one of which is CONSTI- TUTION docked at the Charlestown Navy yard in Boston. However, there were other players that entered the fray and created some remarkable vessels in the late 1700s and early 1800s. An interesting aspect of the book is the politics and how government infl uenced the Navy and the design of their ships. The administration under Jeff erson and Madison were against a big military and thus used gunboats for defense of our coastal waters. The War of 1812 changed this phi- losophy as it became obvious that a bigger Navy was needed to protect our merchant
