Two (Eventing) Heads Are Better Than One By Liz Cornell

W

henever two top-notch trainers can work closely together, good things usually happen. Their expert ‘eyes on the ground’ and complementary skills can

create a winning formula for everyone involved. Recently Next Level Eventing, based at Tucalota Creek

Ranch in Temecula, California, announced a new partner- ship between Tamie (Tamra) Smith and fellow upper level eventer and trainer Heather Morris. Their venture will con- tinue to be run out of Tucalota Creek Ranch, and clients will now have the opportunity to train under both Tamie and Heather, benefiting from their combined wealth of knowl- edge and experience. Both have impressive resumes. Tamie received numer-

ous accolades when she was younger, and had the oppor- tunity for a run at Rolex Kentucky. More recently she was long-listed for the Pan-Am Games team in 2011, awarded a U.S. Olympic Grant to compete at the Boekelo CCI3* (in The Netherlands) where she was a member of the Na- tions Cup team and competed on the winning Nations Cup team at the Bromont CCI3* (Canada) the same year. In 2014, Tamie was the USEA 10th Ranked Lady Rider of the Year and the Area VI Rider of the Year. In 2015, she was an alternate for the U.S. eventing team at the Pan-Am Games and was crowned the 2015 USEF National CCI3* Champion at Fair Hill.

Heather went to work for top eventer Mike Huber in

Texas in 2002. In those 13 years, she has had many wins and placings on numerous horses. Notably she has competed at Rolex Kentucky twice with Slate River, placing 22nd in 2012. She competed First Mark with success through three- star. Charlie Tango was Preliminary Horse Champion at the American Eventing Championships (AECs) in 2014, Interme- diate Champion at the AECs in 2015 and named the USEA Intermediate Horse of the Year. Her newer mount Get Rowdy was Training Horse champion at the AECs in 2015. When we caught up with the pair, they jointly answered our questions about their history and future together.

When did you first meet one another? We met each other when we were just eight (Heather) and eleven (Tamie) while riding with our childhood trainer Kim Scheid. We competed through our teen years together be- fore Heather moved to Texas to train with and work for Mike Huber.

How did you come up with the recent idea to join together and become a team? The idea was never one we ever thought was possible. We have been BFFs since we were kids and would dream of working together, but never thought it could really
