the attractive bay was 17 years old at the time and schooling Second Level. Russell remembers going to try Muddy for the first

time. Muddy’s owner rode him first, and then Russell got on. “I asked if she had a different saddle because hers did not fit me,” he recalls. “She unsaddled him in the middle of the arena and we walked to the tack room to get a different saddle. When we came back into the arena Muddy hadn’t moved. At that time, three years after I had broken my back, it was critical that the horse I bought was quiet on the ground, so this sold me on him.” He credits his instructor with encouraging him to

do a Century Club ride. Together Russell and Muddy rode Second Level Test 1 at the Devonwood schooling show in Sherwood, Oregon, last year. He says support from his barn mates on the day of the show was awesome and Muddy “showed how incredibly able a 32-year-old horse can be when maintained with lots of exercise, good food (despite having virtually no molars left) and a big paddock to roam in.” Russell has adopted a fitness program to help him keep up with Muddy. “I am always the one breathing hard at the end of a lesson,” he says. To stay fit he does Pilates three to four times a week, rides a stationary bike three times a week, and walks his Norfolk Terrier at least twice a day. Now that he’s retired, he’s also look- ing forward to exploring other interests like fly fishing, fly tying, bird watching and photography. As for his riding, Russell hopes to have several more

years with Muddy. “We both seem to be slowing down a bit, but we’re still working on perfecting the test we did for our Century ride,” he says. He’s very grateful for the Century Club and says he’ll continue supporting the Century Club and other Century Club hopefuls in the future.
