frozen semen. Florestan I has hundreds of direct descendants, many of whom have been very successful in dressage. Tree of his sons stand in North America for Hanoverian breeding: Freestyle, First Dance and Florianus 2. In addition, the North American stallions Fabregas and Furst Impression are Florestan I’s grand- sons. In Europe, Florencio I is the most important son of Florestan approved for Hanoverian breeding. In addition, there are many European grandsons who carry on Florestan I’s breeding line. Several of the most popular Florestan I descendants currently being used in Hanoverian breeding include: Fidertanz, Furst Nymphen- burg and Floriscount (all through the Florestan I son Florencio I), and Furstenball and Furst Romancier (through the Florestan son Furst Heinrich). Indeed, Florestan I is principally responsible for the remarkable resurgence in popularity for dressage breeding of the blood-

line (which long had been important for jumper breeding) that traces back to the Toroughbred sire Furioso xx (who passed away in 1967 at the age of 28 and was the son of Ascot Gold Cup winner, Precipitation xx). Florestan I is renowned as a “stem- plehengst,” a breeding stallion who stamps his foals with his own likeness. His offspring are reputed to be easy to handle and ride. And he obviously also produced top sport horses. Florestan I himself was extremely well bred. His Hanoverian sire, Fidelio, was one of the most popular sires in Rhineland.
But perhaps even more importantly, Florestan I’s Rhineland dam line was especially strong. Florestan I’s dam, Raute, was a state premium mare, champion of her age group at age three, winner of her class at the German Mare Show in Verden, and champion young mare at the Federal Show in Aix-la-Chapelle. Raute’s sire, Rheingold, also produced the DLG reserve champion mare Rheinfee, who produced another of the most important Rhineland sires, Ehrentusch.
