Brownsville Song (B-Side for Tray) Kimber Lee’s Brownsville, about the slaying of a promising young African American, is an important, though not that well written, drama. Eighteen-year-old Tray Thompson was a Golden Glover, a potential scholarship student, and a dynamo always moving forward. Was his death, on a street corner in Brook- lyn, “gang related”? Was he someone else all along? The non-linear script has lulls. Moxie Theatre’s gritty and graceful production, ably directed by

Delicia Turner Sonnenberg (recently awarded “Director of the Year for 2015”) features top level perfor- mances by Sylvia M’Lafi Thomp- son (recently awarded “Actor of the Year/Female, 2015”) and Cortez L. Johnson. Worth a try. MOXIE THEATRE, 6663 EL CAJON BL., SUITE N, ROLANDO. 858-598-7620. 7PM THURSDAYS, 8PM FRIDAYS & SATURDAYS, 2PM SUNDAYS, THROUGH FEBRUARY 28.

that “revolves around the true corre- spondence between a flawed soldier stationed in Vietnam in 1968 and his daughter, searching for answers in the present.”

Guards at the Taj A play of vast extremes, Rajiv Joseph’s obsidian-black comedy begins at the birth of the Taj Mahal, where Humayun and Babur have been “dawn patrol” guards for years. The play is funny, tragic, and Grand Guignol gruesome. Its sweeping highs and lows can fascinate, if you don’t let obviously skewed logistics intrude. Manu HNarayan (Huma- yan) and Babak Tafit (Babur) create a deft, odd-couple pairing of lifelong friends and polar opposites. Their exchanges, even when the story bleeds them of their humanity, are

crisp. sly, and fully felt. Worth a try. LA JOLLA PLAYHOUSE, 2910 LA JOLLA VILLAGE DR., UCSD. 858-550-1010. 8PM THURSDAYS & FRIDAYS, 2PM & 8PM SATURDAYS, 2PM & 7PM SUNDAYS, THROUGH FEBRUARY 28.

to keep them separate. RICHARDSON HALL, 551 FARRAGUT CIRCLE, EL CAJON. 7PM FRIDAY & SATURDAY, 1PM SUNDAY.

The Last Match The Old Globe Theatre presents Anna Ziegler’s “funny and visceral look at the sacrifices we make to stay on top.” Russian phenom Sergei Sergeyev and American superstar Tim Porter do battle at center court. As the game unfolds, the play goes into their minds “to reveal the lives and relationships that led to this defining moment.” Gayle Taylor

Upchurch directs. SHERYL AND HARVEY WHITE THEATRE,

1363 OLD GLOBE WAY, BALBOA PARK. 619-234-5623. 8PM THURSDAYS & FRIDAYS, 2PM & 8PM SATURDAYS, 2PM & 7PM SUNDAYS, 7PM TUESDAYS & WEDNESDAYS, THROUGH MARCH 13.

The Metromaniacs David Ives’s “translaptation” of Alexis Piron’s French farce, La Metromanie, dazzles with wordplay. Eighteenth century Paris has gone crazy for poetry (“verse-mania”) and young Damis falls for his favorite poetess. Complications arise, mul- tiply, then proliferate. Everyone becomes someone else. Ives’s iambics (spiced with contemporary slang) are classy. The play, however, is an almost endless maze. The parts, in the script and the Old Globe produc- tion, are more interesting than the

whole. Worth a try. OLD GLOBE THEATRE, 1363 OLD GLOBE WAY, BALBOA PARK. 619-234-5623. 8PM THURSDAYS & FRIDAYS, 2PM & 8PM SATURDAYS, 2PM & 7PM SUNDAYS, 7PM TUESDAYS & WEDNESDAYS, THROUGH MARCH 6.

Now You See It North Coast Repertory Theatre presents Georges Feydeau’s farce about “paranoia, jealousy, a phi- landering husband, hypnotism, a spurned lover and a scandal- ous discovery.”

NORTH COAST REPERTORY THEATRE, 987-D LOMAS SANTA FE DR., SOLANA BEACH. 858-481-1055. 8PM THURSDAY & FRIDAY, 8PM SATURDAY, 2PM & 7PM SUNDAY, 7PM WEDNESDAY.

Now or Later Diversionary Theatre stages Chris- topher Shinn’s political drama about the Democratic Presidential can- didate and his family on election night. “Sequestered in a downstairs room, the soon-to-be-President’s son watches as controversial photos of himself at a college party explode over the internet.” Matt M. Mor-

row directs. DIVERSIONARY THEATRE, 4545 PARK BL., UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS. 619-220- 0097. 7:30PM THURSDAYS, 8PM FRIDAYS & SATURDAYS, 2PM SUNDAYS, THROUGH MARCH 13.

Rasheeda Speaking Vantage Theatre stages Joel Drake Johnson’s “tense and cringingly funny portrait of racial paranoia.” Co-workers, one black, one white, are driven apart by their boss in this “office-politics thriller” about a human resource-problem that

“doesn’t turn out quite as expected.” CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF LA JOL- LA, 1216 CAVE ST., LA JOLLA. 858-459- 5045. 7PM FRIDAYS, 5PM SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS, THROUGH MARCH 16.

The Seagull The Old Globe/University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program presents Anton Chekhov’s “dark comedy about the impos- sible nature of love, ambition, and pleasing one’s parents!” Brenda DeVita directs.

UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO, 5998 ALCA- LÀ PARK, USD. 619-260-4600. 7:30PM SATURDAY, 2PM & 7:30PM SUNDAY, 7:30PM TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY.

Short Eyes Amigos del REP presents a read- ing of Miguel Pinero’s drama of prison life. Most of the convicts are either black or Puerto Rican. When a young white prisoner accused of child molesting enters the cell block, they call him “short eyes,” the low- est form of criminal, and vow to dispense justice. Bryant Hernan- dez directs.
