Building a new career – from copper to construction
Having been a successful policeman in the London Metropolitan Police Force for some years, Chris Yorke looked for an opportunity to help him build on the skills he had acquired and develop knowledge to take his career in a different direction
He found it in the University of Portsmouth‘s MSc Risk, Crisis and Resilience Management postgraduate programme which fitted the bill exactly. He reflected: ”Being a policeman you are constantly put in situations that are a test of your decision-making – ultimately in managing the risk of unpredictable or potentially- dangerous situations. It was a great foundation, but I felt the masters would push me onto wider strategic thinking about risk.”
MSc Risk, Crisis and Resilience Management, which is offered full- time in one year or part-time over two years plus the dissertation, is designed for those wishing to build a career in this exciting field or, like Yorke, consolidate existing
Yorke had already studied in Portsmouth where he took BSc (Hons) criminology and criminal justice before progressing to his first master‘s MSc International Police Science. No stranger to studying at this level, he still finds it challenging to achieve the life/work/study balance and commented: ”This year will be the hardest because it is dissertation year. When looking at a ‘to do‘ list as long as your arm the studying is the first to be pushed to the bottom. When I was in the police it was quite easy because the shift pattern meant my rest days might fall on week days. But now it hurts to spend weekend time studying.”
experience into a professionally- recognised master‘s degree. Risk managers and those responsible for the continuity of business during periods of crisis can be found in organisations across the globe. This can be a fast- paced, adrenaline-pumping and incredibly exciting role for those
who like to take on challenges to ensure their organisations can withstand all sorts of environmental, technological and unpredictable situations. Resilience is key for organisations in today‘s turbulent times and risk managers are fundamental to achieving this.
With his eye on running the family construction business, he feels he is now better equipped to move the company forward and said: ”Being a small company a lot of decisions are made on gut feeling – this of course is the complete opposite of risk management which forces you to look at all the facts and the probabilities.”
