• A successful manufacturer who has developed an award- winning apprenticeship academy, has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list. Tim Brown MBE is managing director of Superior Group in the Ferndown Industrial Estate, which produces O-rings and seals for the UK and international market, exporting them to around 45 countries. He employs 185 people, including 18 apprentices in the company- run Superior Academy, which was opened in 2012.


• Hotelier Robin Hutson has been awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Business from Southampton Solent University in recognition of his contribution to the hospitality industry. CEO and chairman of Lime Wood Group and Hotels, Hutson is an entrepreneurial hotelier with 40 years‘ experience in some of the world‘s most famous hotels. On receiving his award, he said: ”I am surprised, proud and delighted in equal measure.” A food and beverage-led hotelier, Hutson‘s most recent venture includes The Pig, which has established a reputation for re-inventing the country house hotel sector. Hutson is also the recipient of several industry accolades including Hotelier of the Year and Outstanding Contribution in The Cateys – the industry equivalent of the Oscars – and received a Lifetime Achievement award at The AA Hospitality Awards 2015.


• NatWest has appointed a dedicated sector leader to oversee technology and IT businesses. Roland Emmans, who will be based in Southampton and Reading, has over 20 years‘ banking experience and takes the role as business development lead for the technology sector, supporting businesses across the UK. He will work alongside technology, media and telecoms sector head Neil Bellamy, offering specialist support to the bank‘s relationship management teams as well as specialist IT and technology businesses.


• South Coast law firm Coffin Mew has appointed Margarita McNee as its new head of HR. McNee has joined the firm following over 25 years at retail giant B&Q where, latterly, she was its employment relations, legal and human resources policy manager. While at B&Q, McNee was responsible for managing a team of in-house employment solicitors and employment relations experts to support and advise on contentious and non- contentious employment issues across the business both in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. She will form a critical part of Coffin Mew‘s senior management team developing recruitment and talent management programmes.


• Hampshire law firm Moore Blatch has strengthened its clinical negligence team with the appointment of two experienced solicitors. Dr Mala Sidebottom, a dual-qualified solicitor and doctor, and Amandeep Khasriya, a clinical negligence solicitor, will join the existing department, which already has a strong reputation for its clinical negligence work and again achieved the highest rankings possible in the independent guides to the profession The Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners.

• Barclays has announced the appointment of Ian Workman to the role of managing director, strengthening its South East business and corporate banking team. Workman will lead a team of 400 relationship managers and directors across the region responsible for Barclays business and corporate customers and clients, from start-ups to FTSE 250 companies. Workman has been with Barclays for 26 years having started his career as a new entrant in a small branch in West Wales and then worked across the UK in a variety of relationship and leadership roles.


• The Southampton Property Association (SPA) has appointed a new chairperson. Nella Pang, associate director at property consultancy JLL, takes over the reins from Lucy Richmond, continuing the latest line of women at the helm. Pang was elected onto the SPA committee three years ago, before becoming vice chairperson last year. Explaining her ambitions for the role, she said: ”It‘s both exciting and a great privilege to be appointed as chairperson. The SPA embraces all businesses with a strong interest in property, so there are many opportunities to increase awareness of our work among potential new members and widen our network along the South Coast.


• Nick Jennings, professor of computer science at the University of Southampton, has been made Companion of the Order of the Bath in the Queen‘s New Year honours list for his services to computer science and national security science. Jennings, who is head of electronics and computer science at the University, has been recognised for his pioneering contributions to the fields of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and agent-based computing. He is the UK‘s only regius professor in computer science, a prestigious title awarded to the University by the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee.
