Call for crossing at busy junction
RESIDENTS have handed a peti- tion calling onthe county council to build a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Old Tovil Road and Hayle Place as a matter of urgency. Dinesh Khadka presented the 321- signature petition to the Maidstone Joint Transportation Board and is pictured with Councillors Dan Daley, Denise Joy and Rob Bird. Hesays pedestrians, including the elderly, children, and cyclists have to cross the A229 Maidstone gyratory near this busy junction every day. He added: “When I moved to this
area in 2010 I immediately felt un- safe and unsure when crossing this dangerous road and since I started taking our own children to nursery in 2012 it has become even clearer to me how difficult it is to cross with a pushchair and young children.” High Streetward’s Liberal Demo-
crat borough councillor Denise Joy has given residents her full support. She said: “This is at the heart of a res- idential area of Maidstone with South Borough Primary School, the Sunshine Children’s Centre, Little Stars Pre-School and Maidstone Grammar School all nearby.
“People have been campaigning
for a safe crossing here since 1994 but heavy traffic flow from Loose Road into Maidstone has continued to worsen. “Action must be taken now before
more injuries or fatalities occur.” County councillors Rob Bird and
Dan Daley have also pledged to press KCC for the long-standing issue to be properly addressed as a matter of priority. Cllr Rob Bird said: “Maidstone Council and KCC are both commit- ted to promoting more sustainable transport by encouraging people to walk or cycle, rather than increasing car journeys. This will only happen and can only happen if we take the necessary measures to make it safe for people to cross dangerous roads such as this.”
Neglected meadow cleared
MORE than 40 years of under- growth has been cleared and the new-look Crisbrook Meadow near Tovil is starting to emerge. Following its purchase for the community in 2013, a year was spent clearing the site. Wildlife habi- tats have now been created in the top meadow, an ugly concrete wall demolished and a historic slope re- instated. The 2.15-acre meadow formerly
known as Little Switzerland – was bought by the Valley Conservation Society (VCS) and Tovil Parish Coun- cil to protect it from development. The land links the conservation so- ciety’s twomill ponds to Hayle Park Nature Reserve, held in trust by Maidstone and Tovil councils with
the VCS. Dennis Usmar, a spokesman for
the society said: “The former graz- ing meadow had not been man- aged at all for 40 years and was overgrown with self-seeded trees, shrubs, brambles and nettles. Now, we plan to return it to lowland wet meadow.” He thanked organisations and in- dividuals for their financial help, in- cluding Tovil Parish Council, Maidstone Lions and Cllr Brian Clark. He added: “Over the last month the VCS volunteers have worked more days than usual to clear the top of the meadow and over the next year we plan to plant specimen trees, sow wild flower and grass seeds, and to rebuild the wall.”
