DORIS Abne (88) lived in Allington, Wateringbury and Barming. Born Doris Turner in Hackney, London she moved to Kent with her parents, relocating to Royal British Legion Village where she married mechanic Tom Abne from Larkfield in 1947. The couple raised children Graham, Christine and Julie. Tom worked for Fine Fair on Hall Road, Aylesford and Doris’s work included employment in the


Carlton Cafe – on the current site of a British Heart Foundation shop in the centre of Maidstone – and at a cake shop; Icing on the Cake in Allington shopping centre. Daughter Julie said: “My mother loved animals, her home and making and eating cakes, shewas really loving and devoted to her children and grandchildren.”


Laurie Hack


LAURIE Hack, ofAthelstan Green, served for a number of years on Hollingbourne Parish Council. His period of chairmanship coincided


with major events including the building of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and the completion of the mid-Kent section of the M20. He will also be remembered for running the lucky card stall at the village fete, where he would typically wear a big bow tie. Lauriewas married to Inge and they had


one son and one daughter. In his working life hewas employed as a mechanical and electrical engineer, his work taking him as far afield as Mexico. During the war Laurie served as a captain in the Army. Lauriewas an active member of the Royal


British Legion and a member of Maidstone Musical Society. He leaves his wife and children.


MurielWebb


MURIELWebb (94), who died in Bexhill- on-Sea, lived from 1964 to 1980 in Willington Street, Maidstone. Born in Gloucestershire, she moved to Maidstone from Orpington with solicitor husband Ronald (Ron) and their three sons Tony, Peter and Paul. Muriel worked as a school secretary at Molehill Copse School andwas an active member of her local WI. Her son Peter said: “My motherwas


gregarious and outgoing, she loved socialising with friends andwas a keen gardener and knier. Shewas a devoted mother and grandmother.” Widowed in 1994, Muriel leaves her three


sons, five grandchildren, and a great- granddaughter.


Paul Cox


FORMER Maidstone borough councillor (1963-66), businessman and leading member of local service clubs, Paul Cox has died aged 78, after two years of illness. Educated at Kent College, Canterbury, Paul followed his Na- tional Service by join- ing the TAas a captain and later transferred to the UK Warning and Monitoring Organisa- tion situated in an un- derground building behind Brachers (solic- itors) in London Road, Maidstone.


His career turned to general building construction, quantity surveying and estimating. His love of boats saw him buy Tovil Bridge Boat Yard in 1968, selling it 10 years later to buy a partnership in C&C Plant Hire. He joined Lions International (1962-76)


andwas president in 67/68. In 1981 he joined the Rotary Club of Maidstone, serving as secretary for three years and president in 1993/94. He aended Holy Cross Church, Bearsted, serving as church warden and chairman of the Fabric Commiee. Paul was a keen sportsman with an emphasis on tennis, golf, bowls, swimming and skiing andwas a founder member and later chairman and president of Bearsted Tennis Club. He married Pauline Barden, daughter of Maidstone builder Percy Barden (for whom he worked for 17 years) and they had a son Martin (a current borough councillor) in 1966. Pauline died of leukaemia in 1976. They started the Maidstone Leukaemia Research Fund, which Paul and his second wife Carry continued. He is survived by Carry, Martin and grandchildren Amelia and Benjamin.


Sylvia Hodgson


THE deathwas announced of Sylvia Hodgson (78), whowas known locally as a member of the congregations of Otham, Loose and St Luke’s churches. A mother of three daughters, Sylvia’s


work turning round the lives of young men was also commended. Sylvia leaves her daughters, five grandchildren and one great-grandson.


Carey Lander


CAREY Lander (33), whowas born and grew up in Maidstone and aended Maidstone Grammar School for Girls,was the keyboard player and backing vocalist with Scoish indie band Camera Obscura. She appeared on


four of the band’s five albums andwas widely recognised to have contributed greatly to a distinctive image and sound that assured the band of steady cult success. Careywas the


daughter of Eileen and Bob Lander. Her mother spent years as vicar of St Paul’s Church in Boxley Road and her family have thanked friends and fans for their support and donations to a Just Giving page established by Carey to raise funds to fight cancer. Carey got involved with the Glasgow


music scene after moving to the city in 2000 and joined Camera Obscura in 2002, making her debut on a John Peel session for BBC Radio One. Their two most recent albums –My Maudlin Career and Desire Lines – reached the UK Top 40. In 2011 Careywas diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. The lack of awareness of the disease motivated her to raise funds and awareness to help fight the condition. Her appeal raised almost £50,000 during her lifetime with another £15,000 coming immediately after her death. Carey’s parents said they had been “deeply moved by all the gifts and messages” given to her fundraising campaign. Carey leaves her partner Kenny Macleod, Camera Obscura’s sound engineer, her parents and her many fans.


David King


DAVID Arthur King (86), who has died in Redhill in Surrey, spent much of his life and most of his career in the area. His homes included those at Maidstone, Larkfield and Penenden Heath. Other than national service with the RAF in Reading, David spent his working life as a clerical officer with Kent County Council in its education department. Married in 1965 to Gladys, Davidwas
