Thurnham Parish News

Sponsored parish council |News Service ‘well aended’

COUNCILLORS were pleased to learn that more than 30 people at- tended the Remembrance Sunday service at St Mary’s Church, Thurn- ham.

However, they heard there was

some surprise from the congrega- tion about the choice of hymns for the service, which were unknown and rather than encouraging peo- ple to attend in future had served

Meetings normally held on the third Monday of each month at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel. Publicwelcome.

CHAIRMAN:Daniel Skinner CLERK: Sherrie Babington 01634 867173

Shed inquiry INVESTIGATIONS are to be made into the use of a shed built on a private track off Caring Lane. Permission was given for the building at Silver Hill about a year ago, but it now seemed to be occu- pied. The situation would be clari- fied with Maidstone Council.

Next meeting THE public are invited to attend the council’s next meeting at 7.30pm on Monday, December 14 at The Marriott Hotel, Bearsted.

INVESTIGATIONS are to be carried out to determine who owns the land surrounding a layby on the A249 at the top of Detling Hill. Concern has been expressed by Thurnham and Stockbury parish councils that the layby near the entrance to the Maidstone auction site off the A249 needed to be pro- tected from lorries and cars

to put people off. Councillors felt that the choice of

more familiar hymns would have wider appeal. The meeting also learned that the

group promoting the use of the church building for other events was producing a fact sheet to give the public a better understanding of the facilities the building has to offer, including a kitchen, toilets

Barrier suggestion at lay-by

parked there for various reasons. The comments follow a recent meeting of the A249 Group – a col- laboration of local parish councils – which found double yellow lines had not stopped unwanted vehicles accumulating. Councillors heard that as the po-

lice seemed reluctant to enforce the penalty parking area, barriers or bollards might be the next step.

Property sale being monitored THE parish council is to keep a watching brief on the purchase of a property onWare Street, opposite the bottom ofAverenches Drive. Councillors felt the sale of the Fairways could provide access for further development towards the golf course, aswell as on the plot it- self, as land around the site is owned by developers. Efforts will be made to determine who has bought the property.

and great acoustics. The fact sheet, which will be pub-

lished on Thurnham Council’s website and placed on village no- ticeboards, will list the amenities available, including crockery and chairs, and suggest a range of pos- sible uses, such as a venue for singing groups and choirs looking to rehearse, for family occasions, tea parties and art exhibitions.

Going higher

THE Joint Parishes Group (JPG) questioned Maidstone Council’s ability to deal with the local plan. Cllr Peter Waite said: “The un- sustainability of development at Junction 8 has been expressed again by the JPG and the inability of the borough council, which it considers ‘too parochial’ to deal with complex issues such as hous- ing numbers and the infrastructure needs. County council level is the right size to consider proposals of such magnitude.” The highways sign by the nursery near Caring Lane had still not been replaced Thurnham School is to be invited to give a presentation to the council to keep it abreast of issues such as intake and available spaces.
