Mr J Clarke Why study Physical Education?


A-level PE is a progression for GCSE PE students achieving a B grade or higher and ideal for those students that want to pursue a career in sport or study further in this area at university.


If you have a wide-ranging interest in sport and would like to follow a course that is both interesting and challenging then A-level PE could be the right option for you.


The course is taught over eight lessons in a fortnight.


Subject at AS The AS course is assessed over three components in Year 1. Component one and two are externally assessed in two 1 hour 15 minute examinations. Component 3 is internally assessed. Candidates compile a portfolio of evidence relating to practical tasks which is moderated by the examination board.


Component 01: Physiological factors affecting performance


1.1 Applied anatomy and physiology 1.2 Exercise physiology 1.3 Biomechanics, including technology in sport Assessment: 1 hr 15 minute examination paper. Worth 35% of total AS mark.


Component 02: Psychological and socio-cultural themes in physical education


2.1 Skill acquisition 2.2 Sports psychology 2.3 Sport and society Assessment: 1 hr 15 minute examination paper. Worth 35% of total AS mark.


Component 03: Performance in physical education (NEA) 4.1 Performance or coaching of an activity taken from the approved lists


4.2 Evaluation of Performance for Improvement (EPI)


Assessment: Internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence of the tasks and moderated by the examining board.


Worth: 30% of the total AS mark. Subject at A2


The AS course is assessed over four components in the second year. Components 1, 2 and 3 are externally assessed in a 2 hour paper for component 1; a 1 hour paper for component 2; a 1 hour paper for component 3. Component 4 is internally assessed. Candidates compile a portfolio of evidence relating to practical tasks which is moderated by the examination board.

39 Entry Requirements


Students should have achieved at least a Grade B in their GCSE Physical Education (if studied), and a Grade B or higher in PE theory exam. We require a Grade BB or above in Science if PE has not been studied.
