Volunteer training workshop

THE Trust will be holding its annual Planning Volunteers’ Workshop in Edinburgh on Friday 11 December. This free event will include presentations on the threats to biodiversity from development, and provides an excellent opportunity to learn how you can get involved in the planning process. Whether you are

already an active Planning Volunteer or are simply interested in finding out more about issues around planning and biodiversity, you are welcome to attend.

Please contact John McTague for more details on 0131 312 4771 or email jmctague@ scottishwildlifetrust. org.uk.

European volunteer service ends

OUR first European Voluntary Service (EVS) project will be ending in November. Thanks to Erasmus+ funding, the Trust has been able to place European volunteers with our Reserve Project Officers in Dundee and Castle Douglas. The Trust welcomed two

new EVS volunteers (Pedro Romero Vidal & Saúl Alonso Aradas) from Spain who began working in August with our North Reserves Project Officer, Glen Campbell, helping to manage our Highland reserves for the next 12 months. In November, we welcome

seven more volunteers from four European countries for 12 months to work with Duncan Budge in Dundee and Chris Archbold in Castle Douglas.

Funding for new ranger

Ullapool’s big beach clean

Living Seas carried out a joint beach clean with Marine Conservation Society in Ullapool as part of the Great British Beach Clean in September. Initially,

volunteers had hoped to clean two sites, but what had appeared to be a relatively clean site turned out to be far more littered than expected, so

this site remained their focus for the day.

Twenty-two local

volunteers and two Australian tourists joined the clean. After two hours, a staggering 1,536 pieces of plastic, netting and twine, 1,910 pieces of broken glass and ceramics, and 261 cigarette butts were collected and recorded.

WE’RE delighted to announce that – thanks to a £25,000 grant from Scottish and Southern Energy and the generous support of many of our members – we’ve reached our funding target and are now recruiting for a ranger to work all year round to protect and celebrate Perthshire’s wonderful wildlife. No two days are the

same in this job – tasks range from working with volunteers on conservation tasks such as tree-planting and wildlife monitoring to helping out on family “Bug Hunts”, encouraging young people to value nature. Apply for this position online by 13 November.

A big thanks to the fantastic 2015 Handa volunteers

AS the 2015 season on our Handa Island Wildlife Reserve draws to a close, we would like to thank Kate Thomson, our dedicated ranger, and the 50 fantastic volunteers who helped this summer. Anyone who would like to

spend a week volunteering on a beautiful Scottish island should keep an eye out for our Handa Volunteering Programme in 2016. Handa Island is managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and owned by Scourie Estate.
