stiff competition, I look forward to seeing everyone and their beau- tifully trained mounts. I feel lucky to be a part of them and this special group.” With a smile

Ashley recalls the unforgettable experience of her first YDHTS in Colorado in 2007. “I was honored and humbled to be there since I was a relatively new profes- sional trainer and a student of Scott’s. I was able to learn from the best instructors in the sport in an intimate setting and also from my fellow, more experienced trainers who had their gold medals, who had competed internationally and who had created their own successful training businesses.” “In this very emotional sport that we pour our hearts and souls into and with these amazing animals that we love and have been entrusted with, it’s meant so much to me to know that I have friends to call on—friends that have gone through the same issues and are there to give advice and support, whether it be about riding or about clients or

about horsemanship,” Ashley says of her YDHTS friends made during those seven years. Like the other participants, Ashley also thanks the Hasslers and the Malones. “It’s appreciated more than any of us could ever convey and it’s been so important to the future of the sport.”

What’s Next? A decade of YDHTS has cultivated a network of over 200 trainers. Five riders have gone on to compete in the FEI World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses in Verden, Germany for the United States; more have gone on to compete successfully at the USEF Young Horse Dressage National Championships; and many more have developed horses to the FEI High Performance levels. Clearly, this special symposium has made a positive impact on its attendees. Even though last November the Hasslers did not

announce that 2014 was the end of the YDHTS, concerns grew among the participants that perhaps it was. “For ten years we’ve intended to make each YDHTS unique, yet still preserve the overall setting and impact. This took a lot of planning, thought and creativity,” Scott explains. “Now, with the tenth year celebration having been such a big event, we would like to take a year off and begin creating a new event which will hopefully follow the successes of the YDHTS.” Without a doubt, whatever is next on the Hasslers’ agenda, it will be worth the wait.
