News Girls seeking

Guiding hand HEADCORN Guides are looking for volunteers to help keep the unit open. The Guides meet every Thursday

from 7pm to 8.30pm at Headcorn Methodist Church Hall and have been running since November 2013, when the unit was re-formed after a lapse of some years. Nowa shortage of volunteers has

once more put the unit in jeopardy. Jessie Milton, a trained Brownie

and Guide leader who runs the unit, said: “We have 10 girls in the unit but I amnot allowed to run the unit on my own because of the rules around lone working. I only need one person on a permanent basis – or a rota of volunteers.” The unit had to close a few years

ago when it got too large and could not find a suitable place to meet. Jessie said: “Unfortunately, by

the timewe restarted the unit most of the girls had moved on.” She said: “We have a lot of excit-

ing activities planned, including a Headcorn Guides ‘Get Me Out of Here!’ challenge when the girls will have to do their own bushtucker trials.” If you are over 18 and can spare

90 minutes aweek – or every other week – on a Thursday, call Jessie on 07772 390273 or email jessie.mil- ton09@yahoo.co.uk.

Stones’ turnover up as they look to expand

TURNOVER at Maidstone United during their third season back in the county town is up – although profitswere slightly down. Maidstone United Holdings Ltd,

which groups together all of the club’s business activities, reported a turnover of £1.36m – up from £1.26m in the previous period. Gross profit ignoring tax, interest and amortisation was £245,000, slightly down on the £289,000 achieved in the previous period. More than 1,000 season tickets

were sold last season and atten- dances for league matcheswent up more than 10% on the previous year, but the increased turnover was mainly due to additional in- come from the FA Cup run, which included two televised matches. Player wages were higher last season, as the club sought promo- tion to the National League South, knowing this could bring signifi- cant grants for stadium improve- ments.

Announcing the financial results,

club co-owner OliverAsh said:“We are pleased with the results of our

third season's trading. We will con- tinue to be prudent in order to en- sure the club is secure and sustainable. We see in these figures further evidence of the success of the 3G model in building an attrac- tive football and social facility, which is appreciated by thousands of local people. “We now need to build up cash resources even faster ifwe are to de- velop the stadium further. It will be a hugely expensive project. In par- ticular we now need more local companies to come on board to- gether with our existing business partners and share the benefits from the positive image we now have as a club and business.” The need to keep expanding the

stadium to comply with league re- quirements is likely to be an on- going challenge as the club seek to fulfil their medium-term ambition to return to the Football League, ac- cording to fellow co-owner Terry Casey who said: “We are very for- tunate to have a growing supporter base, with plenty of enthusiastic youngsters, who feel a real attach- ment to their club. “We can look back with satisfac-

tion at what has been achieved and the sound base that we have to move this club on to the next level.” All spare cashflow from profits

and reserves has been reinvested in the extension project, which has achieved the 3,000 capacity neces- sary for the club’s promotion.
