News Kennels face

demolition BOARDING kennels in Sutton Valence could make way for five detached homes. A planning application has

been submitted to demolish the Highland Boarding Kennels in Chartway Street. A supporting statement said:

“The area which is currently oc- cupied by these buildings and areas of hardsurfacing will be returned to the open country- side with the provision of an ecologically enhanced area with lake and a landscaped area. “Built development will be re-focused further north, adja- cent to Chartway Street, with the erection of five detached houses proposed with associ- ated garaging and parking. A new access is proposed onto Chartway Street with the neces- sary sight lines. “A footpath is shown linking

the houses to the landscaped area with lake to the south.” Maidstone Council will de-

cide the application. Formore local news

‘Give generously to save village church’

HEADCORN residents are being warned to consider Christmas without their church in a stark message about its upkeep from the village priest. Rev Fiona Haskett says St Peter

and St Paul’s reserves are rapidly running out, with the rate of ex- penditure set to exhaust savings within three years. She said: “Despite cutting our spending to the bone and benefit- ting from regular well-supported fund-raising events, we are eating into our limited reserves at a rate of nearly £10,000 per year.” She added that with expensive repairs to the organ on the cards and the five-yearly inspection of the building this autumn, further work is to be expected on the grade I listed building. “In addition to general repairs

and maintenance,we have heating, lighting and insurance of £4,500 per annum to pay. Then there’s the dreaded ‘parish share’, which not only pays my stipend but also goes towards central and diocesan ex- penses,” she said.

More money is needed to keep St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Headcorn going, says Rev Fiona Haskett

Together, they make a total run-

ning cost for the church of £1,500 per week. Rev Haskett is calling on vil-

lagers to give £10 a year more than they do currently to ensure the church remains in good repair for future generations, featuring at the heart of village Christmas, Easter and harvest celebrations. She added in the parish maga-

zine: “To be honest, I hate having to ask for money; I would far rather be doing something else. However, I care about our church

and I also care about you – that’s all of you, and Iwant to make sure that I or someone like me will al- ways be available to you if ever you need us, whether you’ve ever had anything to do with us in the past or not. Imagine Christmas without the special services. Would you really like to live in a place like that?” Headcorn residents are invited

to make one-off donations, con- sider a bequest in a will, set up a standing order, or join the Friends of the church.
