‘Get involved to have your say’

A STARK warning to villagers about the pos- sible demise of its parish council has prompted two residents to step forward. The parish council released a flyer saying

that unless “new blood” fromBredhurst could be attracted, residents risked having their democratic power handed over to Maidstone Council. Bredhurst Council has run with just five members for many years, but in August, for the first time, there were insufficient mem- bers to vote on a planning application. Chairman Vanessa Jones said: “This

brought the whole issue to a head because we couldn’t form a quorum and so the appli- cation had to go back to the borough coun- cil with no comment from the parish.” Two potential members have agreed to at- tend the council’s meeting in October, with

diversion could help farm vehicles negotiating the bend. Traffic survey Not all the results had been received. KCC would retain ownership of the surveys. Clerk’s report Following Cllr Cooke’s offer to provide equipment for spring cleans, pruners, sack, handy hoops, gloves and a shovel had been ordered.

Ulcombe

Extension proposed An extraordinary meeting of the parish council discussed a plan for a two-storey front, side and rear extension to Owls Oak in Lenham Road, Kingswood. Therewere objections due to

the hope of joining, but it is now hoped more fresh faces will come forward to serve on the parish council. Cllr Jones, who has been amember of the

parish council for 14 years, said: “Everyone on the council does it because they love the vil- lage and want to keep it a clean and lovely place to live. However, three of us have been on the council for in excess of 15 years and it is important that we have new blood. At the end of the day, if residents want a parish council and an opportunity to speak, then they can’t leave it to others.” The council meets once a month (apart

from August or January). Anyone interested in finding out more or

the overwhelming size of the extension and the overshadowing of neighbouring properties; the appearance of the property and the Velux and Juliet windows and the potential loss of trees. Itwas felt that changes to the resubmied application had created further issues and exacerbated existing ones. The meeting heard that there seems to be no understanding by the architect of the parish council’s concerns regarding the original application. The council voted unanimously to see the application refused. If the planning officer disagreed with the parish council’s decision they wouldwant to see the application referred to the planning commiee.
