Church work
ANarchitect will meet Archdeacon Stephen Taylor and the group pro- moting the future of Thurnham church to discuss what work needs to be carried out on the building. Vice-chairman Cllr Richard
Smith told members: “We under- stand the architect is happy to as- sist in the application for grants.” It is hoped that the Detling Singers will be putting on a concert in the church nearer to Christmas. Anyone interested in making use of the church building should contact Richard Smith on 01622 738562.
THE noise from Maidstone’s Ramblin’ Man concert turned a summer weekend into a night- mare for those living in Thurn- ham and the surrounding area. Cllr Daniel Skinner was sup- ported by other members when he told the meeting the volume and the late-night noise was “ridicu- lous”, made worse because of the direction of the wind. He said: “Iwas riding my bike in
the area and the noise could be heard from the Woodland Trust, Thurnham church and the Pilgrims’ Way. Itwas ridiculous, forcing peo- ple to close their windows on some
CONCERN was expressed at an- other change to the police commu- nity support officers (PCSOs). Megan Day (22) introduced her-
self in April as the PCSO for Thurn- ham, saying she knew the areawell. She took over from Tim Gurr in Jan- uary. Now responsibility for the area, including Detling and Boxley, has instead been taken on by PCSO Matt Adlington. Cllr Ted Denham said: “There are real fears that the attitude is that it is
of the hottest days of summer. “It seems to have been well or- ganised and everything was tidied away afterwards and while I don’t mind Maidstone Council holding concerts, they will need to turn it down and finish earlier in future. It was unbearably noisy that week- end.”
County councillor Jenny Whittle
said: “It was so loud, I thought there was a party going on down the road; instead, it was right over in Maidstone.” There was also concern that the borough council had still not re- sponded to all complaints.
Another change to PCSOs
far easier to lose PCSOs than police- men and as the budget constraints dig deeperwe will see more go and that is concerning.” Itwas suggested that members ac-
knowledge the work of their PCSO in writing, where possible, which it was felt could help secure their posts. The latestweekly crime figures for Thurnham showed thefts from Water Lane and Crismill Lane and criminal damage in PilgrimsWay.
Traffic issues TRAFFIC hotspots and the recent changes to the slip road to the M20 at junction 6 will be highlighted in comments from Thurnham Parish Council to Kent County Council in response to its highways survey. Chairman Daniel Skinner said
the road changes had created an even bigger traffic hazard, while Cllr Mick Wise said: “This change should have been under review rather than just imposed, as it has been.”
Traffic hotspots identified by the
parish include Caring Lane, Will- ington Street and Junction 8 of the M20. The council will respond with its comments in full to the county council by the closing date on No- vember 27.
Historic record A SET of bound minute books be- longing to Thurnham Parish Coun- cil, dating back to the 1800s, have found a permanent home at the Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone. Councillors felt the set of six
books needed to be safeguarded for future generations, and made available for inspection. Members will take a look at the
books at their next meeting, before they go off for safe storage.
