Fence just not cricket, say club
LENHAM Cricket Club say they are unhappy with an 8m-high fence being built close to its boundary as part of a scheme for 24 homes. In April, planning permission
was granted to develop an infill site in Maidstone Road, which includes the demolition of the former United Reformed Church and ad- joining hall.
The decision was referred back to Maidstone Council’s planning committee to agree conditions re- lating to landscaping and the cricket ball stop nets, which were designed into the scheme to protect the new homes.
Richard Greenwood, president of Lenham Cricket Club, said: “The
club have had no confirmed infor- mation on the netting and are a long way from accepting provi- sional details.
“When you buy a house you don't accept a neighbour putting a netting on your ground and reduc- ing its length.” However, according to a plan- ning officer the netting “will be on land owned by the applicant but adjacent to the cricket club”. Cllr Tony Harwood, a member of the committee, said: “We have built in every safeguard we can. Because of the degree of detail we have gone into we have done the best we can in a sensitive situation.” The committee agreed to confirm the proposal.
River fun for young carers
MAIDSTONE Riverside Rotary Club joined up with Maidstone Canoe Club to give young carers an exciting afternoon on the River Medway. The afternoon involved challenging but fun tasks in canoes, ending with a barbecue. The Rotary Club also teamed up with Kingfisher Med- way Trust to arrange a series of day trips for the carers and their families.

ing resident Dennis Edwards is pic- tured, right, receiving an award from MP Helen Grant to recognise the work he, and his late wife Sirpa, had undertaken for the community. Visitors enjoyed food from across the globe, craft and clothing stalls, and were able to find out about local charities and community groups. The event was organised by Cohe- sion Plus and Maidstone Council.
