ith two Kannan offspring
in the top three at the 2015 World Cup Finals in jumping, it is worth taking a look at the qualities this KWPN stallion is imparting. The fact that the winner, Albfuehren’s Paille (chestnut), and the horse in third, Molly Malone V (grey), were both mares means we can compare them without having to consider gender differences. It is also worth noting that this column has
previously looked at a Kannan offspring, Nino des Buissonnets, who is the reigning Olympic champion and a former runner-up at the 2012 World Cup Finals.

Although neither of the mares is in an ideal
stance and better positioning was not possible, both mares are standing comparably. Lumbosacral gap (LS) – As indicated by the
arrows, both mares have an LS (the palpable gap just in front of the high point of the croup or in front of the sacrum) that would be bisected by a line drawn from the top of one hip to the top of the other hip. This placement, as opposed to the gap being rearward of the line from hip to hip, is a key factor in the strength of back that aids in athleticism. Not coincidentally, Kannan displays the same strength in this area as his two daughters and Nino des Buissonnets do. Rear triangle – Both mares show an ilium
