improve in the mare base so you can be sure of the quality you are producing. I love that they tend to be forward-thinking horses who like having a job and love people. They’re smart and willing and have a high degree of trainability that makes them suitable for amateurs as well as professional riders.
Why should equestrians choose a Royal Dutch Sport Horse as their next mount?
I think if they are looking for a horse to be a partner, one with a ge- netic history of soundness and good temperament, they should con- sider the Dutch horses. The breed is talented and willing as a whole and the horses are mostly kind with ‘gas pedals.’
What are the goals of your breeding program? The goal is twofold. One is to produce Grand Prix horses. We have
two now and three more developing for the FEI in the next year. Our second goal is to be sure that, while we want power and talent, we also produce horses who are ridable by equestrians who are not necessarily aimed at the FEI ring but want a talented horse who is a pleasure to live with.
What factor is most influential for you in your breeding program? Temperament, personality and a good hind leg.
If you had to pick a favorite horse from your program, which one and why? Rhett, of course, because he was our first homebred to make it to
Grand Prix. He took us to Devon, Gladstone and national finals. He loves Jim and his work. But there are others…I love the mares who give us these wonderful horses to raise, and Taxi who is Rhett’s young- er sister and even more talented. Mic, my sister’s Intermediare 1 horse
who has taught her so much, and Finn whose talent and sense of humor are just being discovered.
What breeding lines have been the most influential in your breeding program and why? When I bought the
mares, I bought a lot of the old lines and mares with good jumper blood. Babsi helped me find mares that had, and passed on, strong hind ends and great canters and walks. Great mares produce great foals and I think you have to have some of that old blood to balance out the specialist breeding being done today.
Before Taxes , aka Taxi, was born at 4 p.m. on tax day. Had to choose between getting the taxes to the post office or delivering the filly. Filly won! She is also by Sir Sinclair, and a sis- ter to her Grand Prix horse Rhett.
What are some of the major successes of your program or what as- pects are you most proud of? Rhett being the successful Grand Prix horse he is with Jim, Air Mar- shall being invited to the developing Grand Prix horse finals, Copy and Charlie winning their first preliminary competitive driving CDI, letters from happy owners telling me stories of how they love the horses they have bought, and Finn making the decision to go forward and NOT buck off the cowboy! v
