TECHNICAL TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

For the oil & gas industry, the ability to safely work at height in challenging, confined locations is vital. This capability is particularly important for companies who carry out inspection, maintenance and repair services for wind turbines.

EXPERIENCE

3sun Group, based in Great Yarmouth, has delivered these services to the wind sector since 2008. They have grown to make renewable energy services a core focus, providing lifecycle solutions for customers’ assets from design and engineering through to installation, commissioning and maintenance.

The Group was awarded full membership to the International Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA), which ensured technicians had the required procedures, skills and techniques to safely work at height, but they wanted to push this notion further, for their team and clients.

GROWTH STRATEGY

Earlier this year and as part of their growth strategy, they acquired rope access training specialists, AID Industrial, which allows them to provide specialist training in-house through their 3sun Academy.

For the past 17 years AID Industrial has provided specialist PPE and worldwide safety courses in Industrial Rope Access, Work at Height, Rescue and Tower Climbing. The company uses a 22 metre training tower to replicate servicing offshore equipment at height, which offers candidates the opportunity to fully experience the scenarios that would be faced during operations.

IN HOUSE ADVANTAGES

The acquisition of AID Industrial has been hugely significant for the Group – they can now deliver projects which require level 3 IRATA approved technicians who are capable of site supervision for work scopes requiring rope access.

Working at height and rope access are key competencies required of their technicians to ensure that they can offer a safe, fully comprehensive and cost efficient service to their customers. Previously, these highly sought after personnel would be outsourced, but they now have several of these technicians working within the Group.

ETHOS

Training and development is an integral part of 3sun Group’s ethos and the 3sun Academy plays a vital role in providing opportunities and experiences for young talent which will ultimately help to remedy the current skills shortage in the industry.

The Academy has over 30 apprentices who are now integrated into every element of the Group through their training initiatives. The Skills Development Initiative was established last year with the aim of enhancing the skillset of apprentices aspiring to enter the energy industry and is significant in the way it offers apprentices the opportunity to gain practical offshore experience.
