September 2015 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 19. Maine's Lobster Boat Racing Season Comes to an End
about 9 o’clock when we had a rush and fi nished with 47 boats entered.
Pemaquid is not a points race, and has
different classes with less races, 18 total. First up were three work boat races,
the fi rst being Outboards 25 hp and under. Skiffs 16-feet and under. Age 18 and under, which had fi ve entrants. The winner was Caleb Young in LITTLE ABBIE [14’; 18- hp Mercury]. In the second race, Outboards up to 70 hp. Skiffs over 16-feet, Al Strout in CLUSTA [Lowe 18; 40-hp Tohatsu] got the win. In the fi nal skiff race, Inboards or outboards – 71-hp and over, Skiffs 16 feet and over, six boats were on the line and the winner was Roger Feltis’ QUICK PENE- TRATION [Corson 16; 130 hp Yamaha]. Now up was the two gasoline classes.
In the fi rst one, (Four and six cylinder gas, 24 feet and over) there were no entrants, but three came to the line for the second (Gas V-8 any cu. in. and under, 24-feet and over). Bruce Engert’s THUNDERBOLT did not have much trouble fending off her competition.
There are only eight diesel classes the
fi rst of which is Diesel 175 hp and under, 24-feet and over. There was just one entrant, Dana Russell’s KNOT AGAIN [27’ Novi; 115-hp John Deere]. In the second diesel race, Diesel 176 hp to 210 hp, 24-feet and over, there were three racers on the line and Spider’s HELLBLAZER [Crowley 28; 186-hp Isuzu], took the win. One of the prettiest boats on the coast is Don Drisko’s MERGANSER [33’ Calvin Beal Jr.; 230- hp Yanmar] and she has done well in the next class, Diesel 211 hp to 250 hp, 24-feet and over. She was up against Jason Lord’s SLEEPLESS NIGHTS [RP 31; 210-hp Cummins], who just did not have enough for MERGANSER. Next came Diesel 251 hp to 350 hp, 24 and over with four entrants. Raymond Carter’s WHO’S BUYN [Flower 33; 300-hp John Deere] took fi rst. Nick Wiberg and his MISS KATIE [Holland 31; 355 hp Cummins] missed Winter Harbor, but he was at Pemaquid. He was in the Diesel 351 hp to 450 hp, 28 to 35 feet 11 inch and under and simply left the competition in his wake. Up next was Diesel, 351 to 450 hp, 36 feet and up, with two boats on the line. TURN THE PAGE has been dominate and today was no different. Another boat we have not seen this season has been Chip Johnson’s THREE STARS [Mitchell Cove 35; 650-hp Mack], but he came out to race in Diesel 451 hp to 650 hp, 28 feet and over against three others and with a speed of 36 mph he was able to keep everyone behind him. In the fi nal diesel race (Diesel, 651 hp and over, 28 feet and over) we were going to have a great battle between LISA MARIE and WILD WILD WEST. One problem for WILD WILD WEST is Pemaquid has a very short course and hopefully there was enough distance to clear the engine and get up to speed. When the fl ag dropped LISA MARIE jumped into the lead, then the smoke cleared and on came WILD WILD WEST. She ran out of race course taking second. In the Novi Race Kyle Westhaver’s HIGHLANDER took the win. We all know who was going to win the
Wooden Boat race, and he did not fail us, MERGANSER.
Only one boat came to the line for the Gasoline Free-for-All, THUNDERBOLT. In the Diesel Free-for-All six boats were on the line, and it was another great battle between LISA MARIE and WILD WILD WEST and this time WILD WILD WEST got the win. The fi nal race was the Fastest Lobster
Boat Afl oat, and if nothing failed at would be THUNDERBOLT’s race to win and she did.
When we fi nished the last race I texted
Travis [Otis] to see how things were going in Portland and he said they were doing the Free-for-Alls. This is the fi rst time in over 16 years that I missed a lobster boat race. Fortunately Travis and one judge made notes for me. In the fi rst work boat classes there were no entrants, however there were seven on the line for the second. It was no surprise that the winner was J-BIRD. Nine boats were on the line for the third and fi rst went to WILD WOMAN.
Again there was only one entrant in the
fi ve gasoline classes, BLACK DIAMOND in Class C.
As on the previous day LYNN MARIE
took fi rst in Class A. Second went to Scott Dyer’s RELENTLESS [BHM 28; 200-hp Yanmar]. In Class B DOTTIE MAE took the win. In Class C it was MISS ATTITUDE getting the win. In Class D CARL & CO. repeated his win from the day before with PULL N’ PRAY second. We have not seen Mike Gray’s VENOM [Muscle Ridge 28; 250-hp Sisu] for quite some time, but he showed up to race in Class E and was the only entrant. In Class F there was just MS. ROSE and in Class G, just HAPPY HOUR and they ran down together. In Class H FIRST TEAM took the win with MISTRESS second. In Class I the same competitors as was at Long Island were on the line again. MOJO INC. got across the line fi rst but second went to WILD ONE with MISTY third. In Class J BLUE EYED GIRL took the win. In Class K LA BELLA VITA got the win with ALL OUT second. MISS KARLEE was the only entrant in Class L as was Steve Train’s WILD IRISH ROSE in Class M(A). Five boats were entered in Class M(B) and the winner was CHELSEY ANN BRIELLA. In Class N it was WHISTLIN’ DIXIE followed by 4 GIRLS and BAILEY & BELLA. In the Wooden Boat Race, up to 35 feet
11 inches, SAND DOLLARS III was able to best DELUSIONAL again. There was no entrants in the second Wooden Boat race. The winner of the Gasoline Free-for-All was BLACK DIAMOND. In the Diesel Free-for-All some were surprised to see WHISTLIN’ DIXIE get the win over MISS KARLEE.
Now for the last race, Fastest Lobster Boat, again it was WHISTLIN’ DIXIE, followed over by MISS KARLEE.
A close battle between JENNA MARIE and JANICE ELAINE in Diesel Class J.
