exhibi
When you hear the word exhibition, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Art openings, canapes, beverages and fancy clothes? At Hong Kong Academy there are many exhibitions going on across grade levels, all with the aim of sharing student learning and the thinking processes students go through within and beyond the classroom.
At HKA, exhibition is not only all about ‘The Exhibition’ in Grade 5. At HKA, students begin preparing for this and engaging in mini exhibitions from the early years and have an opportunity to participate in key learning experiences in each grade level throughout the Primary School. At an HKA exhibition you may expect to see student experts, examples of the inquiry process, multiple perspectives, invitations to action, attitudes and learner profiles all on “exhibit”. And you will gain a sense of the energy and enthusiasm that students enjoy when sharing their learning! Whilst exhibitions throughout the Primary School may look slightly different, they all share the same common goal of opening up classroom doors and celebrating the learning that occurs. This learning then develops further to prepare students for the Secondary School where opportunities for sharing work continue.
A KINDERGARTEN PERSPECTIVE What is it?
In Kindergarten, an exhibition is held annually in correlation with the inquiry into Sharing the Planet. For the past couple of years, the focus of this exhibition has been to share an understanding of animal habitats and how living things co-exist and depend upon one another. Students plan, research and present their cross- curricular learning to their parents, their Grade 4 buddy classes and a number of teachers and administration staff. Work from art, IT, literacy and unit of inquiry is presented on the day. This includes elaborate paintings, collaborative collages, video footage, posters, slideshows, books and more. The students’ summative assessments are also presented on the day as an accumulation of learning. For these assessments in 2014-15, students had a choice of how to present their understanding. Some chose to write books, others made posters or dioramas.
The exhibition is set up as a visual walking tour of the inquiry cycle, inclusive of work and activities from each part of the inquiry, from tuning in to taking action. Typically, a strong element of action will be present. This year, the kindergartners used their knowledge of how to take care of animal habitats to create a book about caring for our local Sai Kung cows. They sold the books to the HKA community, and proceeds from these sales were donated to Sai Kung Buffalo Watch. Representatives from the Sai Kung Community Centre and Sai Kung Buffalo Watch were also invited to the exhibition.

What is the purpose? The Kindergarten exhibition acts as an early introduction into what an exhibition is and as a taster of what is to come as students continue through Primary School. It also provides young students the opportunity to synthesise, present and share their learning with the wider school community. Students are given the opportunity to develop their approaches to learning and recognise that there is a bigger purpose behind their learning and action. This allows for an authentic connection to be made between what they do at school and their world beyond the classroom.
A GRADE 3 PERSPECTIVE What is it?
Student experts, confident presenters, images, informative writing, interactive quizzes and digital and written presentations is what you could expect to see at a Grade 3 exhibition. During this opportunity for sharing, students authentically describe their learning to a varied audience of parents, students, teachers and community members. The energy and excitement in the lead up and on the day can certainly be felt in the Grade 3 classrooms! Typically, Grade 3 students share their knowledge acquired during the Who We Are unit, which focuses on body systems — how they work, the connections and how to keep them healthy. The key concepts of function, connection and responsibility are a focus throughout this unit and many connections are made between experiments, video footage, integration with P.E., independent inquiry and personal
