HKA ATHLETICS Dragonflies BY AARON COOK
The 2014-2015 school year has come and gone so quickly. It feels like yesterday that we were preparing our sporting teams for trials during the first week at school in late August 2014.
What a year it has been for Dragonflies on the sporting front! In the Secondary School, just over 63% of the students participated in sports, playing on 25 teams across seven sports and three different sports associations. This year, HKA students participated in two additional sports, Cross Country and Swimming, along with Track and Field, Volleyball, Basketball, Netball and Football.
Participation, fun, forming new positive relationships and living a healthy lifestyle are all key components of why students are encouraged to join a sporting team at HKA. Along with this also comes the hard work which students and coaches put in week aſter week. Through this hard work HKA has had some amazing success in all areas of sport this year with strong finishes in many tournaments.
ACAMIS Volleyball - Girls 1st place, Boys 3rd place ACAMIS Basketball - Girls 1st place, Boys 3rd place ACAMIS Football/Soccer - Girls 3rd place, Boys 4th place
SCISAC Football/Soccer - Boys 2nd, Girls 4th SCISAC Volleyball - Girls 2nd, Boys 5th SCISAC Basketball - Girls 2nd, Boys 3rd
ISSFHK Girls U14 Volleyball - 1st place Hong Kong Junior Netball League - 2nd place
These teams were able to achieve such great results by participating in the local ISSFHK leagues which enabled students to play matches on a weekly basis and build on their skill level, team structures and general game play.
Along with these brilliant team performances our individual athletes have also set the pool, track and trails alight with some fantastic individual performances. A big shout out must go to all the HKA coaches who have given up copious amounts of time to train the students, travel on weeknights to and from league games and meets and also accompanying students to tournaments in various parts of China.
The school’s Weekend Sports Programme, initiated and run by parents, has also grown from strength to strength. These parent-led and parent-supported training sessions are fun, effective and great for team-building! In the Weekend Sports Programme, we see HKA’s long tradition of parent support for the school combined with sport and in our fantastic new campus.
It is great to see the growth and development of the sporting programme at HKA and I hope to see this continue over the next few years, with the possibility of some exciting new events to be added to our programme and calendar.
