Pr New When the weekend arrived, one of the girls who had been

there on that fateful snow day approached Mrs. Diplomat and naively reported “how much fun Macho had” running and playing in the snow all day with the other horses. She had left his blankets and wraps on because she thought they’d help keep him warm—after all, she knew that he had just come from South America and probably wasn’t used to the cold. She hadn’t expected the wraps to fall off, but she had gone and fished them out of the field. The blanket, she reported, had simply gotten so soaked that she had taken it off him when she’d brought him in, and was sorry that she hadn’t been able to find any dry blanket to put on him. Macho was eventually referred to the local equine veteri-

nary hospital for surgery on his hock. The damage was per- manent. The surgeon opined that the injury had been caused after the bandage on that leg had come loose and that while he was running he had stepped on it with his other back foot, causing the hock to become “torqued.” After a long and un- satisfying period of rehabilitation, Macho could not be made pasture sound and was eventually euthanized. Mrs. Diplomat filed suit against the stable. ☛ Turn page for the outcome.
