Based on an examination of the pedigrees of the top 19 jumpers in Las Vegas, it is clear that the Thoroughbred influ- ence was as present in jumping as it was in dressage. The obvious differences between dressage horses and jump- ers are the lack of Trakehner infusions in jumpers and the frequent use of Selle Français ancestors. All of the top jumpers had at least one Thoroughbred

ancestor; some showed the Thoroughbred influence within the second or third generation, and many had several Thor- oughbreds in their fourth and fifth generations, which effec- tively increased their percentage of Thoroughbred blood. The main sources of Thoroughbred were such notables as

Furioso, Fra Diavolo, Wild Risk, Abgar, Sable Skinflint, Lucky Boy, Ladykiller, Anblick, Rittersporn, Nasrullah, Hyperion, Big Game, Abernant, Rantzau, Cottage Son, Night And Day, Uppercut and Ultimate. They spanned numerous registries and were usually most influential through their sons. All but one of the top 19 jumpers had at least one Selle

Français ancestor within four generations. (The exception was an Irish Sport Horse with a high percentage of Thorough- bred blood.) Four of the jumpers had a Selle Français parent, and an additional two of them had a Selle Français grandpar- ent. A total of eight jumpers had their Selle Français influence in the third generation, and four jumpers had that influence in the fourth generation. It should also be noted that several of those Selle Français ancestors were from Thoroughbred sire lines.

FIVE LESSONS #1 – It is fairly obvious that most of the studbooks have become compilations and approval-based registries rather than breeds. The Trakehner, Thoroughbred and Anglo-Arab are the only true breeds, according to the old standards; the remainder of the studbooks are registries which accept horses from a number of other registries and/or breeds.

#2 – Some ancestors seem to be discipline-specific in what they produce, while others crossover between disciplines. In other words, both the ancestors and their descendants have to be judged on an individual basis.

#3 – While the Thoroughbred is a source of ‘blood’ in both disciplines, the Trakehner influence was limited to dressage at the 2015 version of the World Cup Finals.

#4 – The Selle Français influence dominated in jumping at the Finals, but was also evident in more than half of the dres- sage horses.

#5 – As the right Thoroughbred for sport gets more difficult to find today, the Selle Français is gaining ground as a refin- ing influence, or source of blood, in both disciplines.

In the next issue, watch for an article analyzing the blood- lines from the 2015 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.
