American Holsteiner Horse Association Karen Reid Holsteiner Verband

Holsteiners in the News By Liz Cornell

The Breed Jumps to the Top Te Holsteiner is ranked the number one studbook for showjumping in the World Breeding Fed- eration for Sport Horses (WBFSH) as of April 30. Out of the top 20 in- ternational jumpers, five are Holsteiners. Leading the way is Casall Ask (by Caretino), a 1999 stallion ridden by Sweden’s Rolf- Göran Bengtsson.

Fox Fire Farm Boasts Two Special Awards Tis year Karen Reid and Fox Fire Farm in Washington earned a special award, a first-time presentation by the AHHA breeding committee co-chairs, for breeding excel- lence. Karen was honored for having bred the only U.S.-bred Holsteiner competing in Normandy at the World Equestrian Games last year, Cinnco de Mayo. Additionally, Karen was recog- nized for her long-standing history of representing the German Holsteiner Verband in this country, offering frozen

semen exclusively for various German stallions and stand- ing many well-known imported stallions, including Quinar, Cicero, Dolany and Cancara. Karen also received the 2014 Condino

Award for breeding Aliano, the highest scor- ing American-bred Holsteiner stallion at the 2014 AHHA inspections. Aliano (Aljano x Corrado I) was a horse Karen bred in Ger- many in 2002. When the colt was born, she sold him to Canadian Melanie Boucher at FMB Farm in Quebec, who imported him direct from Germany. Today, Aliano is work- ing on the Grand Prix and has shown through Intermediare I with trainer Robert Gharibzadeh. When he

was presented last fall to the AHHA judges, he was 12 years old and had met his dressage performance requirements and earned impressive scores at his inspection. Judge Michael Gonell remarked that “Americans should be standing more stallions like Aliano that excel at both dressage and jumping.”

Rolex Kentucky At this year’s Rolex Kentucky 3 Day Event, the highest placing American rider was Phillip Dutton on the 12-year-old bay Hol- steiner gelding by Con Capitol, Fernhill Cu- balawn. Te pair was ranked 23rd after dres- sage, then jumped up to ninth place after cross country with a clear show jumping round boosting them to finish in fifth place. Te horse is owned by Tomas Tierney and Simon Roosevelt, and his breeder is Tom Goode.

Grand Prix Dres- sage Winner, All- Breeds Te 2014 All-Breeds award winner at Grand Prix dressage, AHHA division, is the imported gelding Frederic 109 (Flem- ing x Landgraf I), owned by Susan Al- len and ridden and trained by Allida Taylor of California. Together they were high-score winners at both the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle. Allida describes Frederic as “a horse with a wonderful mind” who has been a blessing in her life. She is particularly thankful for his owner’s support. She has been riding and training him since he was five. Now at the age of 15, Frederic is still going strong and has become a schoolmaster for Susan.
