Publisher's letter S
ummer is here and I have a question for you! When is the last time you let loose and had some serious fun? In the world we live in today, we are pushed harder and harder to manage every second of our
time, work longer hours, be disciplined and take care of everyone but ourselves. Well, it’s about time we all remembered how to play and bring some fun back into our busy lives.
It seems we’ve been conditioned to believe that after we graduate high
school or college, the fun stops and the serious work begins. And while we do have to spend more time working now, we must not forget that having fun and playing is the life- blood of what keeps us going. Summer is the perfect time to do this!
Can any of you remember the last time you were on a swing, threw a Frisbee, body
surfed the waves at the beach? These are truly life’s greatest pleasures for a kid, why not an adult. Some highly successful companies have brought a sense of humor and play into their workplace. Google allows employees to bring their pets and musical instruments to the offi ce. As cited in Daniel Pink’s book, “A Whole New Mind”, the Wall St. Journal reported that more than 50 European companies have brought in “Serious Play” consultants that train executives with Lego building blocks.
So, what is the defi nition of play for you? It could be hanging out with good friends,
playing a sport you love, dancing with your children, watching a funny movie or jumping on that swing. Whatever it is, make sure that you are having fun doing it and it makes you laugh. Play is something that we should engage in on a daily basis even if only for a short period of time. On a weekly basis, we should try and fi nd longer periods of time to really let loose and enjoy ourselves. Remember, part of the reason we are here in this lifetime is to have all different kinds of experiences, having fun and playing being one of them. It shouldn’t be an activity restricted to children or a certain period in your life. You should incorporate play into your life for your entire lifetime. Find one thing you love to do that brings you joy and makes you laugh and do it today or this weekend. Then try and incor- porate more and more aspects of play into your daily and weekly schedule. You will fi nd that these times of rest, rejuvenation and fun will allow you to return to your job or business with renewed excitement and mojo momentum to keep reaching for those ultimate goals and dreams.

W
e all want to make the most out of the beautiful Maine summer months, and I have discovered one great way to be active out- doors, try new activities and have some fun!
L.L.Bean is a Maine landmark and institution, so it is no surprise that the folks there have come up with the Outdoor Discovery Schools. The Outdoor Discovery Schools program run year-round, but the activity options are nearly endless during the summer months. You can take fl y-casting lessons, archery classes, and stand-up paddle board instruction, just to name a few. L.L. Bean also offers
day trip excursions, including kayaking, bird watching, and hiking. There are also overnight, multi-sport adventures to consider, like the Maine island kayak camping trip.
There are typically fees associated with the trips and lessons, but there are also
many free events including camping trip planning clinics, catch and release fi shing demonstrations, bike maintenance clinics, lectures, and much more.
I recently tried snowshoeing, archery and stand-up paddle boarding with L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools. All three activities were new to me, but the instructors were very knowledgeable and helpful and I had a great time and learned some new skills. I will defi nitely be doing more events this summer!
